Seinfeld Poppyseed Bagel Plot Plays Out in Real Life

Latest

In 2010, Elizabeth Mort’s newborn baby was taken from her and placed in foster care after she tested positive for a tiny amount of opium metabolite in her blood. It turns out, though, that the test result was a false positive caused by a poppyseed bagel she ate shortly before going into labor, which is similar to something that happened to Elaine Benes on an episode of Seinfeld.

Mort was separated from her newborn for five days before the Lawrence County Children and Youth Services in Pennsylvania realized its mistake. The ACLU took on her case, saying the policies of the county and the hospital—which are at the center of other lawsuits—needlessly removed infants from parents.

The lawsuit that Mort filed was settled this week, according to documents from the U.S. District Court. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
