Big moves today in the apparel business: PVH is acquiring Warnaco for $2.9 billion. PVH owns Calvin Klein and Warnaco owns the Calvin Klein underwear brand and licenses Calvin Klein jeans, and apparently the companies have been in talks about a merger since 2003. [WWD]

J.C. Penney, which has touted its new policy of lowering prices permanently rather than luring in customers with promises of sales and discounts, has discounted end-of-season merchandise by 30%. This made one Deutsche Bank retail analyst nervous:

“On the heels of a $10 in-store coupon provided earlier this month, free haircuts for kids, and free family photos to begin later this week, we believe JCP is backtracking on its no promotion strategy, confusing customers. We, therefore, remain skeptical of near-term improvement in business trends.”

Former Prada store manager Rina Bovrisse has lost her discrimination lawsuit against the fashion brand. Bovrisse alleged in 2010 that executives at the company in Japan directed her to fire store associates who they deemed insufficiently attractive to sell overpriced luxury goods to tourists; Bovrisse said that when she refused to enact the policy, she was terminated. The Tokyo district court rejected the claim. Bovrisse says she is considering an appeal. [WWD]

Ugg had a bad quarter: profits fell year-on-year by 31%, leading the company to slash its guidance for Q4. It blames sustained price increases for the drop, and says it will lower prices in the U.S. [HuffPo]

Vogue China paid tribute to American Vogue’s 120th anniversary with a lavish gala dinner in Beijing.
