Pussy Riot Would Like to Thank You By Burning a Photo of Putin

Latest

There has been a huge outpour of support directed toward Russian, feminist punk band Pussy Riot since three of their members, Yekaterina Samutsevich, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina, were sentenced to two years in prison after staging a political protest inside a Russian Orthodox church. Now, the band’s remaining free members would like to thank you (and Madonna and Björk and Green Day) for everything you’ve done by releasing a video of them repelling a wall and burning the image of Russian president Vladimir Putin.

“Our country is dominated by evil men,” they shout through their ski masks. “These men think it’s illegal to call yourself a feminist and to sing punk music. These men think it’s illegal to stand up for the rights of the gay and lesbian community. These men think that you can’t criticize your government. These men think that if you sing and dance in an inappropriate way, you get two years in prison.”

Burn on, Pussy Riot. Burn on.
