The ‘Having It All’ Author Is Trying to Fit It All into a New Book

On Tuesday, Random House announced that it had acquired rights to a book by Anne-Marie Slaughter, who will expand on her essay in July/August issue of The Atlantic, “Why Women Can’t Have It All.” Even though “having it all” probably isn’t a real thing, Slaughter’s cover story lured about 1 million online readers into its honeypot of cynicism. The book, which has yet to be conferred a proper title, will hit shelves in 2014, the same year, coincidentally, that the phrase “hit shelves” will become a quaint anachronism from an age in which people could smell the books they read and papercuts still menaced flipping-fingers everywhere.
