Multiple tipsters have written in about a Facebook discussion on the NY19 U.S. House of Representatives Civil Discussion Center related to the rising gas prices nationwide (and blaming President Obama's hasty action), and alerted us that we aren't just talking about oil anymore:
Listen to [previous commenter]. What a little bee he has in his bonnet. Buzz Buzz. My question today … when is Tommy boy going to weigh in on all the Lilly Ledbetter hypocrites who claim to be fighting the War on Women? Let's hurl some acid at those female democratic Senators who won't abide the mandates they want to impose on the private sector.
The scary thing is, this isn't some crazy internet flamer: the author of this horrifying missive, Jay Townsend, is a conservative consultant who, according to his website, has worked in four presidential campaigns, multiple Senate, Gubernatorial and Congressional races. He is currently the spokesman for Rep. Nan Hayworth, New York, whose campaign manager is currently doing some frantic damage control, blaming the campaign of Hayworth's competitor Richard Becker (which is kind of like blaming John Wayne and/or John Wayne Gacy for that mistake Michelle Bachmann made) for blowing the comment way out of proportion, which is so not what people should be doing when someone threatens violent action against a group of people with a metaphor that is dangerously close to a real epidemic, right?
Watch Bruce Harvie, Hayworth's campaign manager, poop his pants in word form:
The comment receiving the attention was not made on behalf of the Congresswoman or her campaign and was clearly not meant to be taken literally... It's not too much to insist that the media responsibly analyze context and perspective rather than simply broadcast hysterical and irresponsible attacks from a campaign that is purely seeking to score political points against a Representative who has a consistently strong and positive record as an advocate for every citizen she serves.
Townsend's gaffe (aside from just, y'know, threatening general violence against anyone) lies in the fact that 72% of acid attacks are perpetrated on women, infamously Burt Pugach's attack on Linda Riss stateside, chronicled in 2007 documentary Crazy Love, an attack just occurred in Pakistan five days ago, et cetera.
Naturally, opponent Becker has since used the comment against the Hayworth campaign, and yet it still feels like zero fucks have been given. Sweet.
