In a super fucking punk-rock move, Tom Gabel, the lead singer of Against Me!, has announced that he will be transitioning into life as a woman named Laura Jane Grace.
Gabel spoke to Rolling Stone about her lifelong gender dysphoria, saying that growing up with it brought "nothing but shame." She alluded to her struggle in the 2007 song "The Ocean," writing: "If I could have chosen, I would have been born a woman / My mother once told me she would have named me Laura."
The 31-year-old Gabel will remain married to her wife, Heather, with whom she has a 2-year-old daughter.
Gabel only told a handful of family and friends about her plan to transition before talking to Rolling Stone. Because this is the first time a major rock star has come out as transgender, the singer made a point of speaking openly about it. "I'm going to have embarrassing moments," says Gabel, "and that won't be fun. But that's part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they'll be fairly kind."
So far the response on Twitter seems overwhelmingly warm, as it should be. Best of luck to Laura.
