Here Is Emmanuelle Alt's First Cover Of Vogue Paris

Emmanuelle Alt‘s first cover of Vogue Paris is out! It features Gisele Bündchen, as previously reported, wearing a white lace Dolce & Gabbana dress. The photographers are Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Overall this is kind of pretty but boring — but we are interested to see whatever Vogue Paris means by that curious Orhan Pamuk cover line. [@vogueparislive]

One of the two people John Galliano is accused of assaulting and berating with racist invective at a Paris bar now says he hopes the designer isn’t “destroyed” by the incident. Philippe Virgitti, whom Galliano allegedly called a “fucking Asian bastard,” among a very many other things, says everything started when Galliano came over to him and Géraldine Bloch: “Right away he started to attack us by saying to my friend, ‘Your voice irritates me, you’re talking too loud.’ Then everything started happening. It went on for 45 minutes … He wanted to humiliate us.” Virgitti said Galliano certainly used racist and anti-Semitic language, but Virgitti thinks “his words overtook his mind. I do not believe he is racist or anti-Semitic.” Although Virgitti says he and Bloch stand by their legal complaint, he nonetheless says: “For me, it was a simple dispute at a bar. John Galliano doesn’t deserve this. I don’t want him destroyed like that…Since all this happened, I’ve learned about his work, that he put diversity at the forefront and mixed cultures in his shows. I believe, above all, that he is very ill…I would like Mr. Galliano to benefit from this unhappy story by drinking a little less and getting back to making the dresses and shows that he did so well.” Since the bar fight that ended in his arrest, John Galliano has been the subject of a second criminal inquiry for using racist hate speech, which is a crime in France. A video was published, apparently depicting yet another incident in which Galliano told two strangers at a bar, “I love Hitler. People like you would all be dead. Your mothers, your forefathers, would all be fucking gassed.” Galliano has been lying low in rehab since being fired by Christian Dior, and his Very Jewish Lawyer has been talking for him in the press. Galliano is fighting the charges, and has sued Bloch and Virgitti for defamation. [NYPost]

• Yohji Yamamoto doesn’t believe designers are under impossible pressures today. “It is not a rule you can apply to all designers,” he says. “It depends on where you were born, how you were raised – it depends on who that person is. I do think the power of fashion has gone down though. Making money is so important now. It’s not about fashion as much as it is expensive handbags. Then there’s this cheap diluted fashion. The Victoria & Albert Museum is hosting a retrospective which opens this weekend, and the Wapping Project and the Wapping Project Bankside galleries have two smaller shows. If you are stuck on this side of the Atlantic, consider picking up the April/May issue of Bookforum, where a detailed review of the V&A monograph and Yamamoto’s intriguing (and strangely sexxxy) new memoir, My Dear Bomb, will appear under the byline of some wannabe fashion writer who calls herself “Jenna Sauers.” [WWD]
• Male model David Chiang — he’s the first Asian man to walk for Emporio Armani, ever, and one of the last to walk in an Alexander McQueen show overseen by McQueen himself — is basically our favorite person in the whole wide world today. There is so much to love in this interview, but especially this part: “My dream is Victoria’s Secret. I’m working on it. I really want big wings. Not the small wings, but Tyra wings. Not Heidi’s wings because they look heavy, but Gisele’s wings would do, too.” Also: “I see myself as the next Linda Evangelista. • In her last dispatch from fashion month — the shows have finally ground to a halt in Paris — Lynn Yaeger parses Marc Jacobs‘ Louis Vuitton show: “If Fashion Week were a movie, you would scream ‘No way!’ at Marc Jacobs’s ending. Too obvious! But believe it or not, a week that began with Galliano‘s banishment over anti-Semitic comments ends with Jacobs expressing his own affection for the wonderful years of the Second World War. Black balloons hover off the Cour Carrée du Louvre, where the Louis Vuitton show takes place, and models dressed as maids with feather dusters line the staircase into the venue, in an apparent homage to The Night Porter, a film about Nazi S/M eroticism that, you may recall, generated its own controversy when it was released in 1974.” [The Cut]

• Claire Waight Keller has resigned as creative director of Pringle of Scotland, a position she has held since 2005. She says the move is “for personal reasons,” and did not elaborate. Pringle also just replaced its C.E.O. [WWD]
• Naomi Campbell is selling the Christopher Kane, Alexander McQueen, and Vivienne Westwood dresses she and other supermodels wore on the catwalk last September during that “Fashion for Relief” show.
