College Paper Calls Student Leader "Fat Whore," Among Other Things

The UC San Diego student publication the Koala is known for witty, pointed satire. Like calling student body leader Carli Thomas a “Fat Whore,” and photoshopping a penis over her face. And that’s just the lead!

In the “piece” — written by the paper’s editor-in-chief, Kris Gregorian, seemingly in response to Thomas’s decision to cut the paper’s funding — the author goes on to describe Thomas as “square chinned, thick-necked uppity skank,” likens her to a man, and opines, “While we here at the Koala don’t wrap it or even pay attention to the state of aliveness of the things we stick our genitals in/on,it’s kind of ironic that we’re spending the $450 allocated to us to print thousand upon thousands of copies of paper that basically say, ‘Carli Thomas, while a homely unfuckable bovine before, isn’t even worth a drunken sportfuck now.'” (And, yes, the entire “paper” is like this.)

Thomas is responding to this cutting exercise in rhetoric by suing for defamation. The university for its part says it does “not endorse, condone, or approve of the material the Koala publishes; however, the First Amendment protects their speech, even though we find it objectionable. Under the First Amendment, the University is severely limited in the actions it can take in response to content published by students”
