House Votes To Defund Planned Parenthood

Latest

The House just voted to strip federal funding from Planned Parenthood and other family planning and women’s health services. It’s not expected to survive in the Senate, but no one can know for sure.

Ten Democrats voted for the measure denying money under Title X that goes to health services — cervical and breast cancer screenings, STI testing, contraception, sex education. ($363 million of it went to Planned Parenthood.) The total vote count was 240-185.

It turns out that, broadly, congressmen and women were less convinced by Jackie Speier’s brave speech than by Michelle Bachmann’s talk of fancy abortion centers and Lila Rose’s desire to deny fictional sex slaves health care.

But the House has its priorities straight. It also voted to continue allowing federal money to go to NASCAR via Pentagon sponsorship! Phew.

If you’re interested, there are multi-city walks for choice happening February 26, the same day of a New York called Stand Up For Women’s Health, co-organized by Planned Parenthood.
