Italian Police Sue Amanda Knox's Parents For Slander

Amanda Knox‘s parents have been living a nightmare since their daughter was accused of killing her roommate, and now they’re facing legal troubles of their own. The Wall Street Journal reports that today an Italian judge indicted Curt Knox and Edda Mellas on a slander charge for telling the press that their daughter was physically and verbally abused during a 2007 police interrogation.

Five police officers are suing Knox and Mellas for saying in an interview with London’s Sunday Times that while being questioned Amanda, “had not been given an interpreter, had not received food and water and had been physically and verbally abused,” according to The Independent. They’re also accused of falsely claiming she was, “hit by a cuff behind the head” and told “if you ask for a lawyer things will get worse for you.” Amanda later said that the brutal interrogation caused her to accuse an innocent man, Patrick Lumumba, of killing Meredith Kercher.

Amanda is currently serving a 26-year sentence and appealing her conviction. Her parents will be tried in Perugia on July 4. If found guilty, they could be sentenced to up to three years in prison.
