The Century is a venerable New York club that recently was the site of a major battle...over women's rights. "Speeches were delivered in black-tie. Strongly worded treatises were disseminated. Voices were raised in usually hushed lounges."
At issue was the club's reciprocal membership with an even more ancient London club, the Garrick, where, according to the New York Times, "while male Centurions had unfettered Garrick access, females were, according to the 2010 Century handbook, "welcome at most times as guests of male members or reciprocal members." Now, amid much debate, much rhetoric and with many bruised feelings, the Century has voted to end its age-old partnership with the Garrick. In a year where the Century has also had to find a new vendor for its famous house macaroon, this is upheaval indeed — but perhaps a final wheeze in what the paper calls the "last gasp of the old-boys' network." Or not: the Garrick's policy remains unchanged.
