In a statement released on his website, Tiger Woods claims his accident was his fault, noting "the only person responsible for the accident is me. My wife, Elin, acted courageously when she saw I was hurt and in trouble."

The statement comes after two days of speculation surrounding the accident, and Woods is clearly aware of the rumors floating around the internet, writing, "although I understand there is curiosity, the many false, unfounded and malicious rumors that are currently circulating about my family and me are irresponsible." Reiterating the original story given after the accident occurred, Woods states that his wife, Elin, was "the first person" on the scene to help him, and that "any other assertion is absolutely false."

Meanwhile, TMZ is currently running a 911 call placed by Woods' neighbor, who notes during the call that Woods is unconscious and that he "can't tell" if Woods is breathing. The call really doesn't provide any new information, but the panic in the caller's voice is palpable, and one gets the sense that the scene was quite frightening.

Woods' statement reads like something that could have been issued yesterday at some point, before the rumor mill went into overdrive, and I fear it may be too little, too late. He asks the public "for some understanding that my family and I deserve some privacy no matter how intrusive some people can be," but judging by how big this story has become over the past two days, I don't think he's going to get it.

I have a hard time believing this story, which makes it even sadder. I don't care if you're getting cheated on; chasing someone with a golf club a-swingin' is not okay type conduct.
