After controversial comments about Jews and Israel, which drew denunciations from the White House among others, Helen Thomas, 89, has announced that she will retire from her position as a columnist for Hearst newspapers. It's effective immediately. [Hearst, Earlier]
I am devastated by her retirement. Yes, what she said about Palestine was stupid and wrong. She admitted it and apologized. It doesn't negate a brilliant career of necessary and humanistic rabble-rousing. She continues to be the only person in the world who regularly asks the US president the toughest and most important questions. Just recently, she outright told Obama to stop using Bushisms, and stop hiding the US' torture. She is a very important part of the conscience of the world's greatest power. I really hope another reporter in the press corps will take her place, although I don't see that happening yet.
