Cathie Black, the president of Hearst Magazines, has written a book called Basic Black, which is "about having a 360-degree life," according to the woman many call "one of the leading figures in American publishing over the past two decades." Hearst publishes newsstand faves Cosmopolitan, CosmoGirl, Marie Claire, O, The Oprah Magazine, Seventeen, and Esquire — and well as titles like House Beautiful, Travel, Town & Country and Quick & Simple. And, based on an interview in WWD, it seems as though Ms. Black embodies the magazines she represents. She wore a pair of BCBG grape-colored quilted shoes with a gold trim for her appearance on Oprah. "They're fun and flashy," she explains. "Shoes are going to be my thing for all of this." How Marie Claire! Once she accidentally took a sleeping pill instead of aspirin during a board meeting for Coca-Cola. ("So much for getting caught up in the idea of power! The only thing I caught up on that night was my sleep!") How Cosmo!

Ms. Black also offers business advice, like don't accept no for an answer and do ample research before an interview (very CosmoGirl and Seventeen!) and always book a room at least one room away from co-workers on business trips, because, "You don't know what your colleagues will be doing during their free time on business trips. And sometimes, you don't want to know." (uh, how Esquire?). In addition, Ms. Black is far too busy to bother with things like plants. "There are no potted plants in my office except for those beautiful orchids that people send to me with the long stem with five or six flowers on it," Black says. "For me, they last about three weeks. I can never remember to water [them]." So Quick and Simple!
