The Gift That Keeps On Giving Off Fried Chicken Fumes

There are moments in which algorithms don’t just appear to be branding and marketing products but in fact dreaming up the products themselves. Apparently the algorithm thinks we want this.

This particular good-for-sale—brought to you by KFC’s rogue bot—is a log that smells like fried chicken when lit, or is supposed to in any case. KFC announced its 11 Herbs & Spices Firelog on Thursday. These cost $18.99.

Business Insider reports that chief marketing officer for KFC US, Andrea Zahumensky, said in a statement:

“At KFC, we have always been proud of our role in bringing loved ones together at the dinner table around a bucket of our world-famous fried chicken. Now, this winter we’re bringing all the things we love—family, friends and fried chicken—together around the fire with our scented firelog.”

My opinion? The chicken scent is not very meaningful divorced from the chicken itself. The product will be sure to make people salivate but is based on a shoddy understanding of human nature. At least it’s preferable to 2016’s Colonel Sanders’ Extra Crispy Sunscreen.

When I was growing up in Maine, my family went through the infamous (in Maine, at least) Ice Storm of ‘98. My family, which was my parents and two dogs, lost power for about three weeks and had to hole up together in the living room around the fireplace, putting moving blankets over the doorways to trap the heat.

Now I’m just imagining what that would’ve been like if it just stank of cheap chicken grease as well. We would’ve lost it.
