Al Gore on Meeting Trump: 'I Thought He Would Come to His Senses, But I Was Wrong'

When asked a question that at this point feels as old as time—does Trump actually believe his own bullshit or is he just trying to appease his base of selfish bigots?—former Vice President Al Gore said on last night’s The Late Late Show with James Corden, “I have no idea what’s going on in his mind.” Hm, same.

“There are a lot of distractions constantly,” continued Gore. Yes, yes, we’ve noticed. Sometimes it takes an expert to point out the obvious, I guess?

“I wish that he would really start addressing real issues like the climate crisis—we need leadership,” said Gore. Don’t we all (times two).

Gore also reported that people at the Pentagon thought we were going to war in the nine minutes between Trump’s first tweet yesterday that introduced his idea of a military transgender ban and the follow-up that specified what the fuck he was talking about. Yes, that feeling of apocalyptic dread—I know it well.

Rounding out this low-states discussion about what the fuck is going on, Gore discussed meeting with Trump after he was elected regarding climate change and the Paris Agreement. “I actually thought after conversations with him there was a chance he would come to his senses, but I was wrong,” said Gore. Why am I not surprised? At any of this?

Meanwhile, on Trump’s recent tweet-wailing on Jeff Sessions, James Corden said, “How can you bully little Jeff Sessions? You just want to...” and then he made little pinching motions with his hands that would be intended for Sessions’s cheeks were the Attorney General in front of him. Shut up, James Corden.

Also on last night’s show, Laura Linney told a ghost story she’s been telling for years. Also low stakes, but weirdly refreshing. Unlike conversations about Trump’s true intentions, it’s not every day you hear about the ghosts haunting the Belasco Theatre—only some days.

Some Pig. Terrific. Radiant. Humble.

I am old enough to remember people not voting for Gore because he was dull.

Imagine how sweet dull would be in 2017?
