We've said it before once or twice, but this time we mean it: Love. Is. Fucking. Dead. After 13 years of unwedded bliss and admirable mutual eccentricity, Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter have split up. A rep for the couple tells People magazine the two "separated amicably earlier this year." This isn't about us, but still: thanks for letting us know just in time to ruin Christmas, guys.

Bonham Carter and Burton announced their separation today; they tell the magazine they "have continued to be friends and co-parent their children," their son Billy, 11, and daughter Nell, 7. The statement adds,"We would ask that you respect their privacy and that of their children during this time."

The two met while filming 2001's Planet of the Apes. They famously never married, choosing to live side-by-side in houses connected by a hallway. There were some nonsense rumors last year about Burton kissing "a mystery blonde" that we won't acknowledge or link to, because Burton and Bonham Carter were—not to overstate this or anything—a role model for the aggressively weird among us, a little misshapen beacon of hope for everyone still hoping to find domestic stability with someone whose brand of extreme rumpledness vibes with our own.

Sigh. Rend your striped stockings, grind your fists into your weirdly enormous eyes, tear down the whimsical village made of nightmares you've fashioned in your heart. It's over.

If two people who seemed to have literally been made for each other (by Vincent Price as The Inventor) and had perfectly subverted the issues of cohabitation can't make it, who among us can? I'll take this as proof that humans weren't meant to mate for life.
