In a nice turn of events (for once!), last night an adorable squirrel monkey who'd been stolen from the San Francisco Zoo was returned to his owners unharmed after missing for two days. The monkey, whose name is Banana Sam (which might be the perfect monkey name) was "hungry, trembling and thirsty" when he was returned to the zoo but otherwise in good health. Here's a penguin tale that will never make it into a Disney move for a variety of reasons: Buddy and Pedro, a pair of male African penguins have found love at the Toronto Zoo, but the zoo plans to separate them. Zookeepers say the birds, "do courtship and mating behaviors that females and males would do,'' and "seem to be in a loving relationship of some sort," yet soon they'll be paired off with females. Buddy and Pedro are being torn apart because their species is endangered, not because zoo officials are intolerant of same-sex love, but it's still a tragic end to their affair. More »

Kandula the elephant is being called a "giant genius." And he does seem pretty clever! He lives in an enclosure at the Smithsonian National Zoo, where jerky researchers put bamboo and fruit just out of his reach. Kandula was smart enough to push a cube over and use it as a step. And when they took away the cube, he used a tire. Which means, like dogs and most of the people I know, he's totally motivated by food. More »

In a report released this week, Curtis-Thomas said that these lad mags are not rated and treated the same way as porn even though she sees the magazines as being "little more than pornography." She also wants downmarket English newspapers like the Daily Sport to carry age-appropriateness ratings. Ben Todd, an editor at lad mag Zoo thinks of his magazines as a "cheeky seaside postcard" and says that if they are restricted by age because of topless photos then newspapers like the Sun that print photos of topless models should be restricted as well. You really know times are tough when even the world's cutest polar bear doesn't have any job security. Knut the polar bear literally wallowed in the dirt today after officials from the Berlin Zoo announced that they could no longer afford to keep him. Naturally, Berliners are outraged and 21,000 of the city's dwellers have signed a petition asking for Knut to stay. The Berlin Zoo says that Knut must leave by 2010, when he is expected to be transferred to a zoo in Gelsenkirchen where there is a young female polar bear named Lara. [Daily Mail] More »

Japanese zookeepers have discovered why their attempts to mate the two polar bears at the Kushiro city zoo have failed: Both are female. When Tsuyoshi, a supposedly male 4-year-old polar bear was introduced to Kurumi, the zoo's 11-year-old female, "he" failed to make any advances. "One day we realized that the two bears urinate in the same way, and we thought, is that how males do it?" said zookeeper Masako Inoue. The sex of polar bears is often difficult to determine because of their long hair. Despite the zoo's breeding plan, it will keep Tsuyoshi, who has become immensely popular with zoo visitors. British Lad Mags: Root Of All Ills Or Symptom Of The Bigger, Sexist Picture?

Michael Grove, the shadow education secretary and a prominent Conservative in England, gave a speech today at a meeting organized by the think tank IPPR condemning lad mags (like Nuts, Zoo, and Maxim) for promoting "instant-hit hedonism" and presenting women as "permanently, lasciviously, uncomplicatedly available." The result, according to Grove, is that the magazines promote a deterioration of responsibility in young men towards women, leaving British communities with apparently the worst social situation that could ever occur: single-parent families. Yes, lad mags may present a sexist image of women, but is focusing on the importance of "male responsibility" towards women reinforcing sexist and misogynist attitudes towards women or destroying them? (A poll on the website of the Guardian reveals that, as of this morning, 54% of respondents think that lad mags do not "make men feckless".) More »
