Life coaching is starting to look a little bit like the pre (and probably post)-bust lending industry: anything goes nobody has to worry about silly regulations! The New York Times ran a story yesterday about the increasing number of 25-35-year-old aspiring life coaches — life experience be damned! — and the opportunistic colleges that are scrambling to accommodate them with accredited programs. But who ever would pay, say, $125 for a one-hour, weekly session with a 27-year-old life coach like Jeannine Yoder? It turns out a lot of people would, including a 52-year-old yoga instructor and a 41-year-old vegan nutritionist, two women with at least a decade on the person they've chosen to steer them through middle age. Researchers analyzed the clothing available for girls on the websites of 15 popular U.S. stores and found that about a third had sexy elements, such as calling attention to the butt or non-existant breasts. 69% of the clothes had only childlike characteristics, 4% had only sexualized characteristics, 25% had both, and 4% had neither. "Confused parents might be persuaded to buy the leopard-print miniskirt if it's bright pink," said the researchers. "Clearly, sexiness is still visible beneath the bows or tie-dye colors. We propose that dressing girls in this way could contribute to socializing them into the narrow role of the sexually objectified woman." More »

Did it ever seem like some of the mothers of girls on the cheerleading squad in high school were living vicariously through their teenaged daughters? Well, Wendy Brown of Wisconsin is their new mascot. The 33-year-old stole her 15-year-old daughter's identity to enroll in a local high school and become a cheerleader (her daughter was living with Brown's mother in Nevada). According to the criminal complaint filed against her, Brown wanted to get a high school degree and become a cheerleader because she felt she missed out on the experience growing up. Employees at the school said that Brown looked older than a high schooler but had the timid demeanor of an awkward teenager. A school officer started investigating Brown after she failed to attend school after the first day of classes. We guess Brown learned her lesson: If you're going to falsely enroll in high school, you better show up to class. [AP] More »
