The new Diablo Cody/Jason Reitman film, Young Adult, opened to wide release yesterday. The red carpet fashion was surprisingly modest, which seems fitting for a film whose power lies mostly in the small, nuanced moments rather than the sweepingly dramatic ones. More »

In the last decade or so, women have been inundated with movies created "for" us — cloying romantic comedies in which the heroine is charming but clumsy/insecure/desperate; in which she can have a "cool" job but can never truly successful. And, as we learned in that Tad Friend piece about Anna Faris in The New Yorker earlier this year: <a href="http://jezebel.com/5868739/sick-of-tired-chick-flick-cliches-so-is-diablo-cody" title="Click here to read more about Sick Of Tired Chick Flick Clichés? Last night's Simpsons dove into the world of fiction writing in an episode titled "The Book Job." Lisa was disgusted with Homer's periodical of choice — JetSki Wanter magazine — which was written by a committee of writers. So Homer got the idea to gather Springfield's best and brightest and work on a YA novel! The group discussed all of the elements that make such a series successful: Orphans, vampires, and trolls. And! As we all know, the troll needs to be played by Robert Pattinson in the flick for true success — perhaps that'll come in The Book Job, Part 2: The Movie Deal. More »

Jaded, drunk, bitter, disillusioned… Charlize Theron's Mavis — the main character in Young Adult — is a kind of a girl after our own hearts. In this trailer, the character comes off as scheming and unlikeable, but with that glimmer of desperation and depression that can be all-too familiar. As seen in this trailer, the writing and direction of this dark comedy set the tone, but Theron's eyes — defiant, exhausted, slightly insane — convey how sometimes aging sucks. More »

Jason Reitman and Diablo Cody have paired up again to bring us Young Adult, a movie about an author of YA novels (Charlize Theron) who moves back home to pursue her happily-married high school sweetheart (Patrick Wilson). From the looks of this poster, her plan might not have worked out so well. On the bright side, maybe we're getting another raunch comedy starring a lady. Which would be excellent ("get the guy" trope notwithstanding). More »

First, a confession: some of us hadn't heard of Stephenie Meyer's Breaking Dawn until a reader asked us to cover it. But tips kept pouring in, and we realized that this young adult novel, the fourth installment of Meyer's Twilight Saga and featuring both teenage werewolves and teenage vampires, is actually a huge deal. At a Los Angeles-area Borders, we found not one but two whole tables devoted to the books and related merchandise. Although we passed on the sour gummy vampire bats, but we did leave with a copy of Dawn, Meyer's disturbingly rosy account of teen marriage and pregnancy, vampire-style. And just as our readers warned, there was a lot to get mad about here. <a href="http://jezebel.com/5034213/breaking-dawn-what-to-expect-when-youre-expecting-a-vampire" title="Click here to read more about Breaking Dawn: What To Expect When You're Expecting...
Welcome to 'Fine Lines', the Friday feature in which we give a sentimental, sometimes-critical, far more wizened look at the children's and YA books we loved in our youth. This week, writer / reviewer / blogger Lizzie Skurnick reads Paul Zindel's 1969 novel 'The Pigman', in which two teens, John and Lorraine, discover that life is no day at the zoo.

It's never fun to return to work after a sojourn in the South Pacific, but my arrival back on American soil has been made sweeter with this news: Jezebel contributor Lizzie Skurnick has sold a nonfiction title inspired by her increasingly-popular Friday feature about beloved, classic children's and young adult books, Fine Lines. (Congratulations, Lizzie!) The lucky suitor? Publishing behemoth HarperCollins, which, thanks to editor Carrie Feron and agent Kate Lee, will be publishing the book — featuring work that has appeared on Jezebel as well as new content — sometime next summer. And Jezebel readers can help, namely, telling Lizzie what sort of accompanying online content and reader participation opportunities you'd love to see — "book clubs, podcasts, interviews, e-book downloads and cover galleries are things we're kicking around," she says — and, of course, title suggestions. More »
