Last night's Simpsons dove into the world of fiction writing in an episode titled "The Book Job." Lisa was disgusted with Homer's periodical of choice — JetSki Wanter magazine — which was written by a committee of writers. So Homer got the idea to gather Springfield's best and brightest and work on a YA novel! The group discussed all of the elements that make such a series successful: Orphans, vampires, and trolls. And! As we all know, the troll needs to be played by Robert Pattinson in the flick for true success — perhaps that'll come in The Book Job, Part 2: The Movie Deal. More »

Tyra Banks says it took five years to write her New York Times best-selling sci-fi Young Adult novel, Modelland. Characters like Tookie de la Creme don't name themselves, ladies! (Seriously though: her poor, ignored ghost-writer.) Ty-Ty got the idea while in the back of a car, wrote it down on a piece of paper, and promptly lost the piece of paper until she cleaned out her purse. Once she got serious, it sounds like she really got into the research. "I love Roald Dahl. On my nightstand right now is James and the Giant Peach, which I'm reading for the second time. I just finished Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I read three Twilights." Now we're picturing Tyra Banks in bed with her banker boyfriend, furiously reading all the YA she missed out on as a kid. She worked on the book while shooting Top Model and initially produced a draft of over 1000 pages. She says the stress made her hair fall out. The first chapter of Tyra Banks' much-anticipated writing debut has hit the net, and, well, it's pretty much exactly as-advertised. Banks had hyped the Young Adult series as a mix of the life of a model and the Harry Potter series, and from what we can garner from the sample selection at Barnes & Noble, her description sounds about right. In fact, the text reads so much like Tyra Banks speaks, it's almost impossible not to her her voice as you read along. More »

Much of the past decade's popular young adult literature geared towards teen girls reads like a PG-13 version of Sex and the City. But Nini Simone's characters deal with crack-addicted mothers, runaway siblings, and teen pregnancy. More »

First, a confession: some of us hadn't heard of Stephenie Meyer's Breaking Dawn until a reader asked us to cover it. But tips kept pouring in, and we realized that this young adult novel, the fourth installment of Meyer's Twilight Saga and featuring both teenage werewolves and teenage vampires, is actually a huge deal. At a Los Angeles-area Borders, we found not one but two whole tables devoted to the books and related merchandise. Although we passed on the sour gummy vampire bats, but we did leave with a copy of Dawn, Meyer's disturbingly rosy account of teen marriage and pregnancy, vampire-style. And just as our readers warned, there was a lot to get mad about here. <a href="http://jezebel.com/5034213/breaking-dawn-what-to-expect-when-youre-expecting-a-vampire" title="Click here to read more about Breaking Dawn: What To Expect When You're Expecting...
Welcome to 'Fine Lines', the Friday feature in which we give a sentimental, sometimes-critical, far more wrinkled look at the children's and YA books we loved in our youth. This week, writer/reviewer/blogger Lizzie Skurnick rereads Elizabeth George Speare's 1958 young adult novel 'The Witch Of Blackbird Pond', in which Kit Tyler, a hothouse flower from Barbados, goes to the Colonies and learns the perils of actually knowing how to swim.

Welcome to 'Fine Lines', a new feature in which we give a sentimental look-back to the children's and YA books we loved in our youth.
