This includes women who I think are hideous that are lauded as sex symbols, women who I think are bitchy or untalented who keep getting roles and awards, and even people who just happen to rub me the wrong way (I'm looking at you, Drew). I always thought this was balanced out by my enthusiastic support for those I DO think are gorgeous, talented, or good-hearted. I just want the women in the public eye to DESERVE it, and I feel the same way when famous men appear to be talentless or nasty. I think women are just more judgmental of women because those women represent us, in a sense, and we don't want to be represented in Hollywood by talentless trainwrecks, but by people who actually bring something to the table.

I've tried really hard to stop doing those instant judgments of women based on how they look (even their clothes, which is really really hard, especially when there's a parade of Scout Moms in Mom Jeans going by!). Like others, I'm a little confused about the SJs. I don't read the comments on them often, but when I do, there's usually at least one that is icky. At least they make me want to do better than that, though.

For me it just comes down to the fact that most of the things female celebs get demonized for (partying, hooking up with people) would be largely accepted (if not celebrated) if they were done by a male star.

The best recent example I can think of is the Star [jezebel.com]
thing with LiLo making Nicole Richie cry because she practically touched heads with Joel Madden or whatever (yes, I think this was total shenanigans, but it's just an example). It's like why would this be Lindsay's fault? Why is she the bad person? Shouldn't the guy who left his wife home with a baby be held a little more responsible? But yet the crux of the story is Lindsay not getting that she crosses a line and Nicole is mad a Lindsay, which kind of feeds girl-on-girl crime anew.

BAnge, sorry to invoke your pretty, pretty girl but that story and a bunch of comments I read about it (not on Jez) just kinda pissed me off this week.

I have had the opportunity to meet Laura Dern and Ben Harper and she echoed that she was thankful for Angie coming into her life so she could meet Ben. I just think for some reason women find a lot of similarities with Jen, so its a double edge sword. It takes these women back to high school and reminds them of the girls they couldn't compete with then.

I can't find the comment about her career but that has always been the reason I disliked her. I feel she won an Oscar for playing herself and has a lack of range. That is also the reason I don't like Renee Zellwegger.

I don't think SJs are going anywhere anytime soon, because they are easy filler for the editors, and they get decent pageviews. But I agree that the editors need to do a better job of picking images if they want the feature to rise above cattiness against the subject's physical appearance. I also think that this has been a problem with SJs from the beginning, and thinking that it started out as funny without being insulting, is probably just selective memory.

I got a worstie the other day, for saying Jenna Bush's wedding gown was unflattering, which was interpreted as me calling her fat. It was a bitchy offhand comment, which I could have said to a friend and immediately have forgotten. But because it was posted publicly, where it was open to extended scrutiny and misinterpretation, it was put under a microscope (my response to that is here, for what it's worth [jezebel.com]).

It really made me think about how my comment was taken, and I won't be posting such things in the future. But it also exposed to me the very blurry line that the editors are trying to straddle here. Whether you're an editor or a commenter, you can get away with making these types of comments if they're funny. I made a badly-worded comment about how I expect a woman of her money and resources to choose a nicer dress, and I got called out. But if I had made a humorous comment about not liking her dress, no one would have paid it any mind. And that kind of thing really adds to the confusion. The name "Snap Judgement" is basically an invitation to post the first thing that pops into your head, and everyone's reaction is different, and everyone's standard of humor is different. If you should only post if you have a good joke, how will you know if others share your amusement until you've said it.

Anyway, it's all a very shady area, and though I'm making an effort to rise above it (I've never been much of a SJ poster anyway), it's up to the editors as much as the commenters. The fact that so many threads have been derailed by this sort of discussion recently should be a sign that the overall tone of the site (not just the commenter rules) isn't being expressed as clearly as it should be.

Well first of all, unfortunately, I'm not in control of the list. I would rather the list be about people that actually accomplished amazing things or helped people, but alas, we live in a hate-fueled "rip-them-apart" society.

Perhaps these women were on the list over Peter Doherty and Amy Winehouse's husband because obviously they are not as famous. I wouldn't know who those people were unless I had associated them with the famous women in their lives. Is that my fault? No…I just know what the media shoves down my throat. Also, did anyone ever consider that the survey itself listed a small group of celebrities for people to choose from? Would it have been different maybe if people could fill in their own choices instead of being given a narrowed down choice?

I'm not denying that there is an obvious double-standard with what men can get away with and what women can; it infuriates me every day. If men cheat they are weak and innocent victims of their uncontrollable hormones. If a woman cheats she's just some evil piece of shit whore. Men are treated like bad little boys who get a slap on the wrist when they do wrong, while women are tarred and feathered for the tiniest indiscretion.

However, that being said, I don't believe it's the case with these women. I truly believe that, like I said previously, they are crazy people that need help. I'm not going to defend their craziness and stupidity in the name of feminism. I don't hate them and the survey could have used a better word, true. But yes, they TRULY annoy me and it has nothing to do with them being women. There are plenty of male celebrities who annoy the crap out of me too that I would love to list but I don't want this to go on forever.

Granted, the list is very small (Angelina, Ashley Olsen, Britney Spears, Halle Berry, Jennifer Garner, Jessica Simpson, Madonna, Mary-Kate Olsen, Paris Hilton, Sarah Jessica Parker, Tyra Banks, Uma Thurman), but almost all of these women have been tagged as ANNOYING, UGLY, WHORE, BITCH more often than not. In the context of the lists provided, the most loved celebrities are men who do things, who are actively displaying their talents. The most hated celebrities are, for the most part, women who are famous despite the fact that they don't do very much. As I mentioned in my second post, I think the implication is that women can use their physical appearance to achieve fame, whereas men are expected to use their physical skills or talents. There's no male equivalent to a page three girl. As a result, I think we end up seeing more women who are famous for their looks, rather than their individual talents. It doesn't mean that women are necessarily bigger fame whores than men, it just means that there's a different market for them. And again, that comes back to the argument about the sexual revolution, and how in some ways it has lead to further exploitation of women.

Hortense and BangieB have both stated many times that in the past, SJs were once a fun snarkfest, where everyone would try to outsnark each other on certain aspects of the given photo at hand. Jezebel wouldn't be what it is without a certain incisiveness, so I wouldn't want to see that totally lost.

I think a lot of people still aren't "getting" them, though, myself included. Hell, I got some positive responses from MY comment in the Dougherty/Winehouse thread, and now that I look at it, it could be interpreted as celeb-hate.

So I don't know. There's a fine line, and I think some of us may have to be gently admonished by Hortense until the incisiveness is reincarnated as something positive and funny all at once. I wouldn't want to see the SJs go away entirely.

Even though I don't believe that myself, I am still affected by it because it's such a culutral archetype at this point, it's deeply ingrained into our beings.

Could also have something to do evolutionarily with men being physically larger and stronger, so when they compete, they physically fight. Don't have a lot of interest in gossip/snarkiness. Women evolutionarily have had to use wits to survive... so being "catty" and tearing someone down emotionally is how they compete. Just an idea, overly-generalizing here and not fully flushed out.

I think the mutual manipulations games that she and Brad play with the media are really crass. She may be a man-eater and a homewrecker in her private life, but honestly, it doesn't really affect my opinion of her...I think what she does professionally speaks loudly enough. I have respect for her altruism, but aside from that...

Oh, and my all time most hated celebrity? Nic Cage. Gaaaah. I practically break out into hives at the sight of him and the sound of his voice.

I think you've made some points that could be fleshed out. I mean, yeah, many celebrities - by their very nature - have made a career out of any or all of the following:

1) Looking physically interesting, if not conventionally attractive.
2) Being able to convey that interestingness on film or on paper - acting, singing, attracting the paps, etc.
3) Having a great deal of money.

These are not exactly what many of us would call "deeper pursuits", and it's true - they are some of the reasons that many of us find celebrity/pop culture to be kind of shallow and vapid and ridiculous and laughable. And that in itself attracts snark and insults, because we think, "hey! Look at this dumb thing this pop star did, even though she has all this money! What a nutcase! I could do SOOO much better."

Schadenfreude is part of the celeb-hate phenom, I think. I'm not gonna be hypocritical and say that I'm totally free of girl-on-girl hate, but I think, in a thread like this one, we can probably express how we feel about celebrities without using the term "train wreck." Just my thoughts, though.

Heather Mills is a nut job who Danced With the Stars (actually, I think she might give to charity), and apparently, according to Google, this Kerry Katona person is a former stripper turned pop kitten, turned typical victim of the "accidental" nude photograph, turned....(wait for it, this is her big accomplishment) columnist for the prominent and classy OK! Magazine!

So is this misogyny? Fuck no! It's probably just showing that women are sick and tired of most of the women in the public eye being absolute train wrecks. Most, not all, are famous for being attention whores/crack heads; not for any type of actual accomplishment. This isn't jealousy, it's pure unadulterated annoyance.

One thing that will annoy me until I'm dead and buried and the worms are eating out my eyes is that women aren't allowed to hate or dislike another woman unless she's jealous. This article is just another way of proving that this sexist ideal still exists.

Men can have any number of physical or personality flaws and still be considered perfectly acceptable and respectable. But if a woman wants to excel and get noticed, well, she better not dare have a physical imperfection or a personality flaw! Any chink in her armor will keep her from getting ahead. I think it gives our society a public forum in which to express our girl-on-girl hate, and it manifests in the lower levels, i.e., Facebook, as others have mentioned above.

She was a junkie who married some guy while he was living with his fiance. She is now a mom to like 6 kids and in love with one of the hottest men in Hollywood. And she "took" him away from Aniston. Women liked him and Aniston together because she was "like them". Normal looking, normal seeming and she got Brad. And then Angie swoops in and even straight women get why he left his wife. All the stuff that happens behind the scenes is a guessing game to the public, but what we saw on the surface was enough for the Angie hate. Not saying I agree wholeheartedly but she did cross Laura Dern - and that ain't cool in my book.
