Please tell me that such a thing exists, or existed... otherwise I'm going to have to up the meds.

(St. Bernard Parish is right outside of New Orleans, where a lot of working-class whites live, and actually was one of the worst areas hit during Katrina). My aunt was from there and she heard us cracking that joke one time and went BALLISTIC on me. I learned my lesson.

@GoodMorningAngels: Yeah, totally. It IS possible to have an attitude of colonial chauvinism in a country as diverse as our's, I think.

Oh, one of the reason Jezebel was so criticized in the recent Gawker thread is how humorless we are. You know, always posting these comments with actual opinions and personal experiences? How fucking girly. We should post one liners with puns instead.

So yeah, it has been an issue here. And the "recent, humorless commenters" who were chastised in that thread are the ones that made we feel comfortable commenting here, because they are the ones that are more sensitive to these things. I've been reading Jezebel, and comments, since about 1 month after the release, but I felt that if I even mentioned anything like that, I'd get ganged on for "not having a sense of humor".

So yeah, this humor thing is a huge sore spot.

When Bush was reelected, I was at a Northeastern university, and I literally heard people say--with utter conviction--that the election must have been rigged, because it was purely not possible for millions of people to vote for Bush again.

It didn't help that I grew up right on the Mason Dixon line and there really were a lot of hickish, white trash folks with drawls.

My mother caught wind of me cringing about southern accents sounding "stupid" and she lost it. Her father was from Texas, he was college educated and one of the smartest, most cultured people you could care to meet. I think mom actually teared up during her lecture. I know it cut deep, and it's one of those times in my life that I look back on 15 years later and still feel ashamed.

I don't post "Don't they have laws that say college students cannot be assaulted in the United States?" whenever something horrible like the Jennifer Brun assault goes down, you know? The fact that there are laws doesn't mean people cannot break them as they do all the time. All over the world. Especially when it comes to violence against women.

I've actually often thought about this a lot when it comes to dealing with people who look down on working-class and southerners and all the stereotypes associated with those things. Places like rural Mississippi are traditional and conservative and in some ways very different from places with more dense urbanization and people treat it like it's "backwards" for that ... but can you imagine people calling, say, a place in rural India "backwards" because it's traditional and conservative, too? There are parts of the U.S. are actually rather "third world" in their own right, and instead of being concerned about this people just like to dismiss them as "embarassing" to the rest of the nation. As if it's everyone named Jim Bob from Mississippi's fault that education levels are so low there, and not, you know, society's fault in letting people slip through the cracks.

I dunno, it gets to me. Like when I talk to someone who's like, "I don't want to visit New Orleans because the crime rate is so bad and it's full of poverty and OMG did you know Louisiana is full of FAT PEOPLE who don't do yoga and eat vegan?" Like, maybe the rest of the country doesn't want to imitate New York or San Francisco or whatever. That doesn't make it "backwards".
