Granted, not all 12 came from the same mum - his dad remarried twice (I believe he had married Dad's mum's sister before she died and asked him to marry her sis, or something similar). But that didn't matter - they were all siblings no matter who gave birth to them.

They came from a culture where large families were common, and while 18 is still extraordinarily large, it wasn't anything terrible. They all enjoyed having each other to take care of each other. They're big on familial respect and filial piety - your family is the most important thing.

I personally only have one sister, and even then I was raised like an only kid because she's 11 years older and have shifted countries when I was 8. I don't regret it, but I wouldn't mind 16 siblings really!

As long as the family's doing good, that's what matters. As long as they are all good people. Sure, health issues are a concern, but otherwise they're not killing anyone! And I really doubt the "what a wreck on the environment" argument - for all we know, they could be really carbon-conscious, and besides it's more about what you do than how many people there are.

Yep, each kid has a "buddy" and the older of the two is responsible for overseeing him/her in morning tasks (dressing, cleaning, etc). So it definitely is a lot of kids raising kids.

I don't think they're socialized much aside from like-minded families.

TLC puts such a nice sheen on the family that it's tempting to say they seem like a happy enough lot (and indeed, I'm sure they are) but I can't really say I'm oh so happy as long as they mind their business because the more I think of it, the more frustrating it is to see the weird sort of empire these families build up.

I'm not huge on Jon and Kate + 8 either, but was really impressed by their efforts to give each kid lots of "me" time on recent episodes. How much "me" time does a Duggar get with mom or dad? How much do you suppose they really know about anyone in their family? Or are they so much alike that there's really little TO know?

Someone has probably replied to this already but yes, I have read that the Mom takes care of a new baby for the first six months to a year, then is is assigned an older kid as a "Buddy" - essentially it's caregiver.

Also, they are all homeschooled, but the older girls are responsible for most of the lessons for the younger ones.

From what I remember the girls are not allowed to go to college. They stay at home and help care for the younger kids and house. I also read that most of the girls do NOT get homeschooled until 18 while the boys do (they start more household duties before that).

The boys can go onto further education , although the thing I read did not mention how they pay for it. Maybe with so many kids they get a lot of financial aid!

The fact that the older kids have to essentially raise the younger ones bothers me, as well as the fact that the girls' education is not taken as seriously as the boys'.

It's definitely a cultural difference, but I also don't think all children are infantilized here. I helped raise my younger brothers and by that I mean, I helped out, I was given responsibilities, but their livelihood was not in my hands. It seems that the Duggar family has created mini-families in their household, where one older child is responsible for a younger sibling. It seems to go beyond teaching kids about chores and responsibility; one child shouldn't be forced to keep doing this because they are older and mom and dad keep popping out babies.

But when your parents are physically, mentally, and emotioanlly unavailable, and that oldest/older child knows that the entire well-being of a younger sibling is in their hands, bad things happen. I agree that it is selfish of a parent to rely on their children so entirely that it hinders the child's ability to have a "normal" childhood, but I'd say that in most families (my own being a good example) of 4 or more, the eldest takes on a large portion of the responsibility for the younger children without disastrous results.
