yes, just like many other comments posted here, my mom pretty much fits into these categories. she's worked all her life but does not have a college degree. she grew up during a time when women were not encourage to finish college but just get a job. she's been hustling her ass off now at 55 yrs old doing contract work. the older she gets the more difficult its going to be for her - oh yeah, AND she's african american.

thx alot, american dream.

Friday025

I wish I got here earlier.

I'll tell you why these women are in poverty... because they spend all their retirement and savings taking care of their ailing husbands!

My dad, who was self-employed, was so stubborn and bull-headed he wouldn't listen when my mom urged him to get medical insurance, he just figured he'd stay on my mom's plan forever. But when she retires, he'll get kicked off. He didn't even apply of medicare when he was eligible. Plus, in his efforts to save his failing business (thank you NAFTA) he canceled his life and long-term care insurance policies.

Now, he's a diabetic amputee on dialysis 3x a week, and most of my moms income supports both of them. If it wasn't for me, they would have lost their house, car, everything. But guess what? I can't support them forever because MY life has to start sometime, right?

If heaven forbid my dad leaves this earth, my mother will be much poorer than she would have been if he'd just taken the time to prepare for this eventuality (he's been diabetic for about 20 years). Fortunately, I can control my income, so I am preparing to support my mom for the rest of my life. I always remind her, if I worked a regular job with the same pay every week, she'd end up on welfare.

ceejeemcbeegee

@arodriguez.romero:
Oh, you're welcome, and again, good luck. I was talking about a situation where someone will be able to do the work and fit in (as well as anyone fits in) in either a public school or a highly regarded private school, but is wondering whether going into debt is worth it to attend the latter.

On the web I often read comments in which people adopt a superior attitude towards people with huge student loan debt. (The local state school was fine for me, why don't you crybabies and whiners shut up?) If it was a decent school with a good placement record at the time no one can say that it was a bad decision.

BTW, in anticipation of comments that I'm being overly consumerist: Education is important for many reasons. But if you're a poor, unconnected person who needs good employment to pay back the cost of your education, you need to try to go to a school that is well respected. Especially if you are a minority.

But there are no guarantees: I know plenty of smart, hard working, well-educated, well-credentialed people who aren't doing so well.

Life's a crapshoot -- wish I'd been informed earlier.

Seeräuber Jenny

Okay, this is way late in this thread so no one will see it, but I totally bought "The Money Book for the Young, Broke, and Fabulous" by Suze Orman, and it is a great resource. I really highly recommend it. It's targeted at people just like us and it covers everything from managing credit card debt, to credit scores, investing, retirement, and buying a house.

You guys, educating yourself is the only way you can hope to make it. I think that book is a great start. I'm thinking of buying extra copies and giving it to other girlfriends (cos I don't know any guys who give a crap about this stuff).

exelizabeth

My mom took care of her retirement, and was able to retire young, at 47. She pays for health insurance, and has finished paying off for a place in an assisted living community she can move to when she wants (she'll still have to pay for her food, but the apartment itself is paid for). She also gets part of my grandpa's pension, cause to encourage people to fight in WWII, a lifetime pension when the vets died was promised not only to the widow but it would be transferable to "any unmarried daughters" (sexist, I know) in the case of the widow's death. Due to this pension, her total income is about 150% what mine and my husband's is, so she is fine.

Now, my mother-in-law I worry about. She lives on a fixed income and squanders her money, and she is 16 years older than my mom. She is always getting into debt, and my sister-in-law tends to bail her out of trouble. I'm preparing for the possibility we'll have to help, but I also don't want to enable her like my sister-in-law does, so I am only willing to contribute when she is in a controlled situation, meaning either in a home, or under the care of my sister-in-law and unable to waste money the way she currently does. I don't know.

Jan74

@myrtlebeachbum: I don't want to glamorize poverty, but I do feel that people in the US have such ridiculous expectations about the amount of space, both housing and land, that one person, or one couple needs. I mean, I want my house and 1 acre too, but after living for a few years in various developing countries, you realize how wealth just leads to ridiculous waste. I've been in countries where everyone brought their own bags to markets, not because it was environmental, but because the society didn't have the money to manufacture a buy bags destined to be used once.

I have the same mixed feelings when I read about fuel prices. It must suck to be an independent trucker now, but when I read about trucking companies making their truckers stay below 62 mph to save gas, I think, damn right, we need to be doing this always.

treecut...will cut a beech

In regard to the value of private schools, it depends on what you want to do and the quality of the school, but yes, for certain fields it definitely can matter. It's certainly not a golden key, but having a degree from a really good school might be the difference between getting your resume read and having it summarily tossed.

If you have a powerful friend or relative in the business you aspire to enter you can go anywhere.

If you are looking at placement statistics for college or graduate and professional schools, be VERY CRITICAL. Placement offices have been known to distort statistics. Research carefully.

@toothsome:

I just happened to see your comment and am jumping in here, but the truth of the matter is that schools are used in part as screening devices, which is why it does matter where you went if you are applying for a position in a competitive field.

Of course what you learn matters, and occasionally the very best schools dine out on their reputations instead of providing the best teaching. But they can afford to do that because more often than not they admit extraordinarily bright, ambitious students, a number of whom have additional advantages in the form of money and connections.

I know there's an idea that the ordinary state school can compete with the best private schools -- it's not true on any level except price.

Taking out big loans to attend a prestigious school with a good placement record is definitely a risk. But it's an intelligent one.

Seeräuber Jenny

I was at the top of my undergrad program and during the interviewing process senior year, every time I heard someone got a job that I was rejected from, I felt like shit--especially since my parents and professors were all expecting me to just fall into a job. And it's so hard to be patient and wait for your time to come, but you know what? You're intelligent and driven--it will come.

In the early parts of this thread there were a few posters talking about how we will never see social security money which is actually untrue. So much of that information is put out there by those who want to change our system into a massive 401K which will help Wall Street and brokers but will really make everyone's retirement a lot less safe. Below is a statistic about Social Security from the AARP. I am not saying it's perfect but those who stoke the idea that SS is going to be gone in a year have a political agenda and it's not one that includes taking care of old women.

From the AARP:
Social Security is in no immediate danger of going "broke." With the retirement of the boomers on the horizon, Social Security began to build a cushion to see us through their retirement years. Because of that planning, the Social Security Trust Funds hold over $1.5 trillion in U.S. Treasury bonds and earn interest every year.

Without any changes, Social Security will be able to pay 100% of benefits until 2040 and over 70% of promised benefits after that. Only paying 70% of promised benefits, however, is not acceptable.

unionmaid

It's hard not to compare when it seems like everything is just easier for those around you. I used to think I took a wrong turn, but now I think I took tons of tiny wrong turns that have led to this feeling that I'm behind. It's hard when you feel that working so hard in HS and college will lead to this huge success party when you're done, but when you're actually trying to make a life for yourself, there are so many other disadvantages you had no control over from the start.

[Personal anecdote ahead]
It's almost impossible for me *not* to compare myself to my peers. I was arguably the "smartest" and most naturally gifted among my (very smart and motivated) high school friends. We were involved in everything at school, in all the upper-level classes, came from good families, etc., etc. I went on to a private, more prestigious university whilst my friends mostly went to big state schools or smaller public colleges.
Well at this point one is living and working in NYC, has a huge circle of friends, and takes frequent trips abroad (by herself, no less) for fun.
Another just bought a house all by herself and just started grad school.
It's sort of the same deal with my college friends. I have a real problem with comparing myself to others and feeling all mopey about my relative success or lack thereof.

SarahMC

@myrtlebeachbum:

no you're right about the "conservationsim" mentality, a lot of people would say that's because your grandparents lived through the Depression and saw firsthand what it's like to have nothing, so they developed such a frugal lifestyle. and they passed these values on to their kids.

don't know if the Depression really is the driving factor in that way of life. but i do agree that people today buy right into the disposability of everything. nothing needs to be saved or fixed. everything can be thrown away to get something newer and better.

also to blame for this disposable mentality is the amount of technical innovation making possible for dozens of new competing products to pop on shelves every month. people get into "needing" the latest cellphone | ipod | etc.

msAnthrope

My mother lives in rural lower Delaware, and save for the summer months when there are tons of people visiting the beaches, there are few jobs.

My mother is not technically skilled, or specifically trained in anything, so like most of the older women she works in an outlet. My mother has savings, but most of the women she works with do not, and with very few customers and cut back hours and pay barely above minimum wage everyone is really struggling. I mean, like getting evicted / can't pay for the gas to drive car to be repaired/etc. kind of struggling.

@secretspygirl: I was an English major in college as well (with a minor in Creative Writing---clearly I was looking for, um, as much earning potential as possible). My parents pushed me really hard to go into finance or IT, but I was passionate about what I wanted to do and held my ground.

Of course, the irony is that now I do IT/web strategy at a Finance firm, but I don't regret my major. In fact, if I were to do it all over again, I would go the same route. I think that a lot of people assume that your college major has to always translate directly to a specific career, but I think that, in the age of new media, there is so much opportunity for crossover. What matters most is your passion, drive, and fortitude rather than the number of Econ classes you took in college (I took 6 of them, and I can still barely calculate tips).

Shawn-Shawn

@lurkystars: for real, right? I mean every you need for a middle-class life these days requires massive amounts of debt. and I swear it wasn't that way a decade or so ago.

I went to a state and then a city college, working my way through. It took me 8 years, but no student loan debt. I learned that the earning power of a public university creative writing major in nyc wasn't all that great on its own. So I managed to find my way into tech, moved in with my parents for a few years, and then moved out to a smaller western city where I was certain I'd have tons of money...

And now, 7 years later, I've still got the job. I'm also still renting an apartment and driving a Honda Civic with a dent in the door. At least the car's paid off and I can put some money away every month. Still, I feel like I can't win.

mol666

In the US we have had open land plus technology to build houses cheaply for 50 years. So, we developed ideas about how much land a person needs.

@grood: I think this is how this works: When a married partner's widowed, they do get to keep their spouse's Social Security payments, under some conditions. If both spouses worked during their lifetime, their household only gets one benefit, yours or your spouse's, after one of you passes away. If only one member of the household gets Social Security to begin with, then you receive this payment with no changes.

The Social Security Bureau sends everyone paying into the fund a document every year detailing your benefits.

@arodriguez.romero: i agree. i think the whole system is going to crash in a couple of years--it's not sustainable. i'm relived that the student loan scandals and all this other financial bullshit has finally broke, but you would be SHOCKED at how many peers of mine with student loan debt didn't even know about the scandal--and they attended the schools outed. it's all tied in to the branding of higher education and the culture at large.
i was lucky enough to have some scholarships and parental support, but i still have a small loan. in retrospect, i would have taken a year off, worked, gone to a public school for two years and then transferred to a "name" school. there's just so much emphasis on the "college experience" and not why you are really there and what you are paying for--a diploma and skills so you can get a leg up in the job market. ok--i totally hijacked this thread. I'M SORRY! no more ritalin for me.

toothsome

@toothsome: i see both sides of that argument. my parents' deal with my brothers and i was that they would pay for college, but only a college that THEY could afford. if we wanted to go to a different college, it was our responsibility to get the grants/scholarships/grades/sat's to get in. for all of us, we took the option of going to a local commuter school and living at home during college while also getting scholarship money from that commuter school along the way.

graduate school, however, was totally our responsibility. all of my school loans are from graduate school alone, and i'll be paying it off for 20 years, but it is a choice i made and i deal with. i can't work in my chosen field of study because i have to pay the loans back (they aren't with sallie mae or whoever and i've deferred them as long as my loaner allows). i work a job where i can save a little, live a little, and pay back my loans. it's not perfect, but i'm able to breathe and tread water.

rednrowdy

@msAnthrope: the other side of that is by not helping your children with their college education, you may saddle them with student loan debt that they can barely crawl out from under. oftentimes, you might be the cosigner on that debt. or helping your kids pay it off or other expenses, or letting them live at home for free after graduation so that they can chip away at it. i don't advocate spending your savings on college for the kids, but i know a lot of people (recent graduates) who were expected to go to fancy private colleges by their parents, only to get accepted and realize mom and dad aren't really paying, but that they don't qualify for any real aid other than expensive private loans shoved upon them by the universities. of course, less expensive, affordable public universities were "below" these people. at 18, that's a huge burden that people only wake up to when they are 22 and making 25,000-28,000/year with no savings, no investments, over 100,000 in private student loan debt, and probably some credit card debt on top of it.

toothsome

@robot ninja spy: I am living with my folks - not for money reasons - but it does help. I have been making serious plans with my cousin to join households when we get to be 70 and live in my house. It seems to me that 4 old folks can pull harder than 2. I realize this is not an option for everyone.

arodriguez.romero

@marin79: Fortunately I'm in a pretty good industry and I keep getting promoted, so hopefully I'll be on top of it all before I'm too old to enjoy it.

I'm not worried about caring for my parents or grandparents, either - Mom and Dad are married, in good health, and our whole family are ranchers in the Midwest, and land doesn't generally depreciate in value. Dad keeps telling me that if things suck too hard in NYC, I can come home and wrangle cattle.

(I think I'm going to play my odds with the financial industry first. It has air conditioning.)

tscheese
