I agree with robot ninja spy that mid-calf can be a dangerous length because it can make one look stumpy. But a pencil skirt that hits below the knee is perfect. A good place to look for pencil skirts is Club Monaco. As for their prices, they do have excellent sales, and they ALWAYS have sales.

A shaped, slim pencil skirt that falls truly to the mid-calf area (like, way past the knee) just looks like bad tailoring.

At least Unidentified Frumpy Olson (UFO) here looks like she just threw on some earth tones that vaguely matched. The O-faced brunette next to her looks like she picked out that weird print on PURPOSE.

You just have to be mindful of making sure the shoes are the right shape for the line of the skirts, don't wear a monochromatic look if the skirt is ankle length, and avoid the mid-calf length at all costs.
