If Harper's Bazaar or Vogue followed overweight women monthly and tracked every aspect of their weight loss, and had a special feature just to showcase the naked bodies of celebrities, you'd never hear the end of it.

To that end, Allure is perfect.. no pretension that it's saving the world, just an unabashed guilty pleasure that shows me pretty things.

Also, I love their Total Makeover feature because it is pretty much the anti-Swan... where they follow the three women throughout the year on what seems like a fairly reasonable diet and exercise plan and show that you really can lose weight and look good without jumping on every trendy fad bandwagon. Obviously this is not rocket science, but it's nice to see it in action and actually promoted in a mainstream beauty magazine.

And this is admittedly subjective, but I think they are pretty good about not using unhealthily thin models and tend to also choose models who are more diverse than the norm (ahem, Vogue and Elle.)

I mean, sure, it's frivolous, but as far as that sort of magazine goes, I think it's one of the best ones out there.

Linda Wells is intelligent and self-effacing and unpretentious and very pretty in a clean, unfussy way. And I actually believe she edits, in the traditional sense.

The mag's photography is gorgeous (there may be ten pages of lipsticks, but they're shot so lovingly), and there is usually some decent beauty sociology article or two. It's an old-school approach to a ladymag, but I far prefer it to catalogs like Lucky or servicey crud like Glamour.

And the great Polly Allen Mellen was Allure's creative director before she retired. That seals the deal for me.
