But it's the same exact way in the south. Schools are STILL segregated, just not by law, etc. Two towns in GA JUST had a co-ed prom last year--in 2007!! I know a white man in the rural south (went to an all-white grade school, blacks went to another, this was in the 90s!) and only met and befriended black people when he got screwed for being poor and went to prison.

Like Pennsylvania, in the south the racism isn't because of stupidity either, it's because people really don't know each other there too.

There were times when I wanted her to march on, other times when I wanted her to just quit because Obama ran a great campaign, and just deserved to win. Recently, I was hoping she would press on, but at this point, I think it's time to call it.

I still think she's the best person for the job. The whole Democratic election process has left me pretty disillusioned. I hope that after this they totally revamp their nominee process. This whole thing went on way too long. And all the calls for her to quit to "do the best thing for the party" and the decision to disenfranchise voters in two states just don't stand well with me.

I think this process has done more harm than good for both candidates. Obama is not the ubermensch, and as much as people hate Bush, I still think it's going to be a uphill battle for him to win (For the sake of candor, I thought it would be hard for Hillary to win if were the Democratic nominee). I'm curious to see how the election will shape up. And as nasty as Hillary got down the stretch, I think McCain and his cronies will likely get nastier. Good luck to Obama, it's going to be a tough 6 months. Let's hope that he proves to be as great as most people believe he is.

I think the reality of the past eight years, the total shit situation we're in economically and in terms of international popularity, the breakdown of American domestic life/services, put into the mouth of a man who is known for giving fantastic speeches may trump McCain's "But- But, he's black!"

That's just a theory. But I think the Dems have more than enough ammunition to win no matter who the candidate is. John McCain can't pretend Bush never happened, especially since he's so keen on his policies.

I had to think long and hard about it, but I decided the one thing I'd like to change in the next four years is equitable access to good health care. It'll have to start at the federal level, and Hillary had the plan for it. That's why I didn't vote for Barack Obama.

I am disappointed, but I would vote for Barack Obama. Maybe he'll even pick up universal health care (what a concept in a democratic society!) I think it's practically criminal that people lose their houses because they can't afford health care and no one's entering family medicine because it makes no money/you can't pay back $200k in loans with no money.

I also just don't believe Barack Obama's "change" campaign. The thing he's left out seems to be "how will you change things" vs. how will they stay the same. Without true campaign finance reform that takes the power from PACs, there will be no change. Just because you're President doesn't mean you can wipe out Congress and rebuild it from the ground up. That's what it's going to take to really change things.

And what would be nicest of all is ditching the electoral college. Imagine that my vote was courted as much as someone in the midwest. As it is now, the south is ignored because it's seen as Republican territory. This is the first time politicians have had to care and campaign here for a primary.

If John McCain wins the next election, I guess our country will deserve to be knee-deep in the mess that Bush has wrought upon us in the last 8 years. I also have the feeling that at least Obama would be less inclined toward cronyism, that is if we're really going to get a change.

That probably makes it hard to ignore, what with the daily exposure and all. I live in DC, which is a very racially divided and racially tense city, but in a very different way. Our struggles aren't so much rooted in the past evils of the South as much as they are in the ridiculous bullshit leveled at us by the federal government. New struggles, as opposed to old -- DC wasn't a residential city until the 20th century, really. So I don't live with the same kind of realty. Because of that I was able to step back (and go further north as well, for study) and view the South from the outside, separating myself from it entirely. And when viewed from such a distance, the incredibly progress that's been made in the past 100 years is staggering. I gained a lot of respect and affection for the South, because without it America just wouldn't be the same vibrant place. The South has spurred the greatet domestic changes to American history, and therefore single-handedly created the need for the social progressiveness we now expect from society. Ultimately, it's contributions have been very, very good.

But that's the picture from afar. Close up, it's a lot more mottled and ugly.

A degree in American Studies means I spent a lot of time studying the cultural trends of the South. It's a rich place, and has been very significant historically, and it's also a wonderfully understandable place if you're willing to focus of a while. I don't think it makes me an expert or anything, but I feel much of my abiding respect for the South, Southerners and their culture and politics comes from the time I took to learn their history well. I'm from Maryland/Washington DC which is only kinda the South, and the DC area runs decidedly blue, but we are a Southern state in many ways and I was never able to delight in that before I found my area of study.

I think the South responds very well to rhetoric, to speech. There is something about Southern culture which makes it susceptible (I don't think that's the right word, but I can't think of the right word) to candidates who have the power to hold audiences by their words. I think it's also why the South tends to be an inviting place for religion and extremism -- because it seems that often the craziest people are also some of the most charismatic.

Obama is a great orator. He has the power to hold the South spellbound with his words, his charism; I don't think that has ever been in question. What I think is the kicker is that his particular brand of liberalism lends itself very well to the kind of inspirational speech the South just loves. He will be able to tune his campaigning in the South so that when he leaves the general impression he leaves behind may b able to gloss over some of the policy-based problems that even conservative Independents and centrist Democrats would potentially balk at.

I feel like htat sounds like I'm being insulting, but I'm genuinely not. The South is a different place than the Northeast, Southwest, and Northwest are, and the Midwest. It has its own flavor. And I just have this feeling that Obama knows how to work the South.

The entire world saw it. Now, the Clinton campaign needs to see it. And, someone needs to tell the candidate. Her speech tonight was delusional -- and embarrassing. She can't and won't be the nominee. (And, for all her feigned concern about counting all the votes, the then-presumptive nominee said the race would be over by February 5th.)

Over the next couple days, the Clinton team over in Arlington need to do some serious thinking. They've all done their best for their candidate. Too many times, however, they've actually aided and abetted the GOP. That has to end. It's time to stop the ugly conference calls and the negative ads. It's time to stop disparaging the Democratic nominee, Barack Obama.
