Used to be a Hillary supporter but after all her negative campaigning I've changed my mind about her. She's not a fighter but just a street savy political opportunist who will say anything to get elected. Her description (2x!) of the so-called sniper fire she had to duck in Bosnia, then her attempt to look like Annie Oakley & get gun people to vote for her & the sneaky way she injects race into her campaign, just turns my stomach & I simply can't take her anymore. If she wins the nomination I'm voting republican.

dylpickle

@SinisterRouge: why can't hillary get her bills passed?@lermanzo: obama & durbin tried to introduce a couple years ago just a measly little bill to put up a website of mortgage lenders who had rec'd federal cautions for predatory lending. this might have saved lots of people from financial difficulty, not to mention a few out of control banks. voted down. tried again after the dems took control. voted down. IMO this frustration had a lot to do with obama running for office as opposed to waiting a while. he can't take any more of that shit!

whyknot

@westvillagegirl: OH sweets. You know that Hillary worked for the Children's Defense fund too right? I mean, c'mon. Both of them have worked corporate and both of them have worked for their communities.
Also you're aware that Obama is VERY MUCH the centrist right??
@Gundam_Halo:
The problem with your argument is this:
The exact same argument can be made against Obama. I don't agree with it, but it CAN be made. We were well on our way to getting the White House no matter what, yes? Now, if Obama had not run -WHICH I AM NOT SAYING IS WHAT SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED- we'd have HRC as our nominee most likely and be well on our way. Same exact argument can be made for Hillary dropping out. I disagree with both. The same way I disagree with BOTH arguments that he's tearing apart the party or that she is tearing apart the party. They are both straw men arguments that have no basis in reality.

Historically, NO ONE has ever been asked to back out of the race, especially by JOURNALISTS. Another example is Jesse Jackson in 1988. He did not drop out when it was clear he was behind. That was also a historic primary wouldn't you say? A black man with the chance of becoming President.

I cite previous examples because that's what we have to go on. There have been many historic races in this country and this one is especially so but not quite as different as all that.

The only explanation for why journalists are calling in this particular instance for someone that still has a chance, no matter how unlikely, to drop out when she clearly has no intention or desire to, is that she is a woman.

And what are you asking? A goon? what does that even mean?

SinisterRouge

There was a Republican congress. Concessions on some points were the only way to ensure success on others. That's how the government was set up, the whole checks-and-balances, no-ideology-is-unilateral thing. Granted Bush seems to have subverted that, and granted maybe there were things that Bill's administration could've fought harder for, but I'm sure it's not like he came home at the end of the day and was all, "Oh, we had to sell out the gays in the military, oh well." You know? He had an opposition congress. He had to prioritize and do what he thought would benefit the most people, regrettably at the expense of some issues. Those compromises weren't because he didn't care, it was the cost of doing business. And I don't believe for an instant that it wouldn't be the same way for Obama if he faced a Republican congress, knock on wood he wouldn't, of course.

girlscoutcookie

And, Artful, Obama, in his short time in the Senate, has already shown that he's better able to win support from Republicans. He even got some Republicans to co-sponsor his legislation. Not so for Hillary. No one co-sponsored her shit in 2007. So, being able to make friends across the aisle might in fact equip him with the clout to put forth a sea change in american foreign and domestic policy, which is what I'm all about.

westvillagegirl (exhiled in chicago)

I can't cite previous nominations because this one isn't like any previously held.

Look at what's going here -- democrats have the chance to take the administration back after 8 years under one of the most unpopular republican president ever. Now, consider that and the current situation with the two democratic nominees right now, and what their current numbers are right now. Is it truly that shocking that Hillary would be called to back down?

Its not like Bill Clinton was a marketing executive, who turned off his position when he got home. She was, as are many first ladies, integral parts of their husband's administration. You don't think Nancy Reagan played a huge part in her husband's administration. You think Barbara Bush just sat around an knitted. Hillary had various policy roles, was privy probably to the most classified information and had an active role in her husband's governing. Now if you backed up your statement with the fact she had all this knowledge and still voted for the "Ability" to go to Iraq, I would respect, but if you think she just twiddled her thumbs for eight years, picking out drapery for the Lincoln bedroom, you are wrong.

ArtfulSlinger

@Artful Slinger (sorry, reply doesn't work): Hey, I'm in your camp. I agree with you, I don't ultimately think he's going to change that much even if he wants to. Maybe I came off in my previous comment as if I think he's a genuine revolution; I don't. That's why I'm not so keen on the change thing, because I think it's both unrealistic and unwise given that the problems created by the Bush Administration aren't going to magically disappear in January 2009 (as glorious a moment as the end of Bush will be).

rah29

But, yes, being a senator of a large state is much more impressive than being a governor of small, backwater state. Especially a state that has a weak (politically speaking) governorship.

westvillagegirl (exhiled in chicago)

@rah29: @westvillagegirl:Again, its not Kuccinich, its Obama. This dude is not some radical lefty who is going to change everything about America. This what I don't get about Obama supporters - he will not reinvent the wheel guys. He would be a welcome change to this administration, but lets not get it twisted even McCain would be. Obama does not have the capital or strength to go in there right not to do this, nor can he when we are in two wars (which he will not immediately pull us out of) a recession lurking, health care messes and a failure in the turn out of products. Obama can not even get to anything he would want to do until he takes care of this shit and if you think that half of the gov't will help him with it, you are crazy.

ArtfulSlinger

@SinisterRouge: I'm not sure how that refutes my argument. The one time she got out in front of risky policy, she was annihilated. I'll admit that people place far too responsibility on her for the failure of health care reform in '93, but this only adds to the fact that her defeat was so total that she has lost the narrative battle as well.

Also, I don't like any of the health care plans on offer.

LittleMac

Plus... change WHAT? The process? the structure of representative democracy? People's minds? Because I totally don't for a second believe that Obama (or anyone) is actually going to fundamentally change any of that in any significant way, and if the call for "change" is a call for "changing the way this country has been going for the past eight years and make it better," I don't see how Hillary, or any Democrat, would be doing anything else. That's my other big problem with Obama. Blahblahblahhopechange. Never mind the fact that policy wise, things are going to change no matter which of them is elected, just so long as we can all get our heads out of our asses at the appropriate time to save ourselves from McCain.

girlscoutcookie

being a community organizer is a FAR CRY from being president. trust me. i would like to say that i consider myself one, and i know i work with a ton of them, and while i love them, they are not suited to be president. even if they were to have a couple terms as a state senator and a little time in congress. doesn't fly with me.

lermanzo
