Yes, I've bought perfume based on reading about it, and also from smelling it on others and from trying it at a perfume counter. I'm going to buy Paris as a result of reading some of the comments here!

I cannot wear any Ralph Lauren colognes, because they all have a particular note that is in his signature fragrance (in the small, red square bottle).

Bah, why did I not read this thread yesterday?

I have three scents that I rotate, a winter, a spring/summer and an inbetween. For winter - it's all about the Gucci Rush 2 - Rush is just a bit too much for me. I've worn this since college, and I will love it forever. Spring/Summer is Philosophy's Amazing Grace. However, it seems the boy has a mild alergey to it...so on the market for a new scent. Otherwise, my secret shame is L'Air du Temps. It's sooooooo old lady when it first goes on, but, by the end of the day, it gets really really sexy, and I basically have to stop myself from sticking my nose in my chest.

london_calling

Oh yes. I bought my latest perfume online, without ever smelling it before. Why?
It smells of violets. I love, love, love that scent, and I wasn't disappointed! It's also of a much better quality than my Fragile from Jean Paul Gaultier.
The scent is of warm violets, with plenty of honey in them. Not candy-violets. It's the little dark purple flowers of Viola Odorata. It's called Violette EDT from Calypso.

Elin

And as for perfumes, I bought Jean-Paul Gaultier Fragile just for the bottle the year it came out, I had never smelled it before. It turns out, I love it. It is the perfect winter scent (it's too heavy and dark for summer). But of course they discontinued it in the US, but my dad goes to France every other year and can get it for me. Now, when people ask me what I wear, I can tell them, "You can't get it in the US anymore, but my father buys it for me in France," and I feel like an Upper East Sider, instead of a kid who's dad teaches French at public school and gets a free trip as long as he chaperones 15 teenagers.

I can't buy a perfume without trying it on because after awhile the smell of it changes for me. I might like a perfume when I smell it at first, but by the end of the day the same perdume make me want to puke. I have visceral reaction to bad smells-they make me want to throw up.
Also, my first perfume was Eau de Jeunesse, and it smelled like citrus, jasmin, vanilla and other scents. To this day the smell of it reminds me of my childhood, of climbing trees, of being happy, and of lying in the grass with the sun warming my body.

littlemissfrench

@estrojen: I love patchouli, I think a lot of people don't give it a chance because of it's association with unwashed hippies. The most popular and flabled perfumes have notes of patchouli, and it has been around way before hippies ruined it.

Oh, and age inappropriate perfumes!!! On my first trip to Sephora when I was 19 I found a perfume-and-lotion set of Dior J'adore for like 45 bucks. I was so excited I could afford it and I never really had worn perfume before. I loved the J'adore ads in the magazines, and it always had a very assertive musky floral frangrance in the scent strips. I bought it and wore that shit out to class!!! Good lord, how inapproprate, one little spritz lasted the whole day, it's very strong, not really for teenagers to wear to class in the morning, I dont' know what i was thinking. I was just starting to get into perfune and makeup and girly stuff, And J'Adore smells like a 50 something divorcee who likes younger men, smokes a pack of Marlboro Reds a day, has a really dark orange tan, and wears too many animal prints. Ugh.

Jezebabe

Judging a perfume solely on its bottle is absurd: you wear the scent, not the package. And the terms "citrus" and "amber" are only vague if you do not know what they mean, they are very distinct, just like the taste of, say, strawberries and mangos are distinct. Most people don't really have a comprehensive olfactory vocabulary, you usally don't grow up being intimately acquainted with fragrance notes, so we are on the whole usually not very well equipped to describe scents, specially perfumes. However, it doesn't mean that it's impossible or vague, or an exercise in futility, people are just not usually equipped with the tools to describe a scent or a perfume. I also think that perfume is very personal, the same notes will not work the same way on everyone, so reading one person's subjective opinion is not necessarily applicable to everyone. Perfume reacts to your individual body chemistry and interacts with the other scents you might carry from soap/shampoo/laundry detergent, etc. And the writer of the Slate article overlooks the fact that Tania and Luca re focusing not on the packaging, or how well known the brand is, or how ubiquitous the fragrances' marketing campaign is, they are focusing solely on the scent. That's why they have good things to say about more "low end", pedestrian brands like Stetson and Tommy and have bad reviews for well known, highly regarded expensive European brands: they are going by their nose, not by the price or the reputation of the name in the label. And sorry to be too pedestrian, but Fracas, beloved of little old ladies everywhere, always smells like Bubblegum to me, and anything with too much tuberose or too many white flowers always gives me a headache.

@tsiyhtlihp: OMG, I love Kenzo Summer, it's not very popular or well known, but it's so awesome. It's like a really light oriental, apparently it has hint of almond that makes it really sweet, it has a faint smell of baby oil, lol, it's sultry without being too heavy for the warmer months. I love it. And the bottle is cute too, hey...

Jezebabe

Perfume is so evocative for me. Every scent I've loved reminds me of a particular time of my life. Age 5: Mom's Tigress. Age 7: The perfume solid in the back of an Avon snowman pin. Didn't smell like the nasty grownup perfumes Avon had (which I also believe were all the same formula in different bottles...I get a headache just thinking about it). Age 9: My first perfume - Love's Baby Soft (ye olde formula, not that new dreck they're trying to pass off as Love's). Age 12: Heaven Scent - again, the original formula. I still love that shit. Age 13: Muget du Bois, which I thought was very chic with its French name, but ended up making everyone sick every time I sprayed it. Age 16: Liz Claiborne, in the triangular plastic bottle. Age 18: United Colors of Benneton. Age 20: Coco, and also Fendi. I maxed out my Hudson's store card on those two. And for everyone who still remembers when it was Hudson's and not Macy's, I have just dated myself.

Then I discovered perfume oils and it was down the rabbit hole from there. Sandalwood, amber (puke), patchouli, etc. I still love sandalwood, but patchouli says to me, "Hi, I slept in a rotting log last night!"

Nowadays, I like Sui Dreams and Covet in the cool seasons, and a mix of lavender and pink pepper for the warm weather.

estrojen

Smelled like the spray of lillies from on top of the coffin three days AFTER the funeral. Wait--I just remembered the name. Sand and Sable. The horror, the horror! It was worse than the entire bottle of Polo my brother spilled in my parents bathroom in 1987--the marble STILL smelled like Polo when we moved out a decade later.

GGordonGiddy

I forgot to mention my secret shame: I actually own a bottle of Hilary Duff's perfume, With Love. It's SERIOUSLY good. Sephora puts out a perfume sampler every year, and it comes with a voucher for a full-size bottle of your favorite. I couldn't believe it when that was the one I wound up choosing. I think many people who wouldn't sniff it based on the fact that it's a Hilary Duff perfume---never mind that her sole contribution was allowing them to use her name on it---would go insane for it if it came from L'Artisan Parfumeur or Bond No. 9 instead. Seriously, it is THAT good.

caffeinequeen

Two of my favorites and how they smell to me:

* Molinard Tendre Friandises: Like spicy jelly beans. Whenever I wear this, I have an irresistible urge to lick my wrists.

All through college, I wore Navy, by cover girl. I always got lots of compliments -- one friend didn't want me to wash clothes I borrowed when I gave them back, one guy friend always referred to me as the best-smelling girl he knew. But then I went to law school and decided it was time to "upgrade" my signature scent, so I went through a couple of years of Estee Lauder Beautiful, and then a couple of years of Amarige (which I bought without even smelling, because a friend told me a story in which one of her boyfriend's friends said, you're a sexy girl anyways, but then when you put on that perfume, it's not even fair). And then about a year ago I bought some Navy, and I'm back baby. It's as good as ever. I think it smells like me before my "upgraded" life turned out to be hell.

luxylux

I am a total olfactory-phile personally and have soldered many of my most precious memories to smells. So of course, I put some thought into what I am spraying on my own bod. Here's the run down:

High School: I started wearing Victoria's Secret Love Spell when I was 14 before I knew any better. When I smell this I always get brought back to making out in my mom's garage on top of the grey hoodie I spent the better part of my adolescence in. It's like a bouquet of carnations and gin and tonic.

Early College: I had a boyfriend who started buying me a lot of gifts the summer right before I went off to school. One of them was Pleasures…which I wore for the amount of time it took for us to break up….about 3 months. It gives me a headache and smells like getting your teeth drilled.

Mid college: I had a brief love affair with D&G Light Blue…then it became the scent du jour and the smell of it mixed with stale smoke made me nauseous so I got over it.

Late College: I went off to London for a bit and picked up a bottle of Vivienne Westwood's Anglomania. A lot of people complain about this one and I think it's been discontinued, but for some reason it works really well with my skin. It is super leathery and it is like bundling up in a cashmere scarf, slipping one some heels and sipping whisky on a mid winter night.

It's sort of become my signature fragrance ever since college. I've always wanted a bottle of Luctor et Emergo…but since it's like 200 big ones, maybe in another life time.

This was fun : )

antioxidant

I wear Chanel Cristalle (the eau de parfum-- it's different, OK?!) and there is just nothing like it. I've tried fragrances with similar components and nothing smells remotely like it. It is light but not informal, rich but not heady, and most importantly it is not powdery, musky, warm, vanilla, nor does it smell like any immediately recognizable flower. It is liquid ocelot; aloof and not overly sweet.

My sister thinks it's stinky, but I get nothing but compliments when I wear it.

I once fell hard for a spritz of Tubereuse Indiana by Creed, but at $150 for a 2.5 oz bottle, it can never be.

half_ocelot

When people are ill, their sense of smell declines, so it would have to be something strong like that to have any effect. Maybe someday you can revisit it.

The first thing I ever wore was Diorissimo, which I bought in a shop in Paris for 39 Francs (when there were Francs.) It was a tiny bottle of cologne, and it smelled like lilly of the valley with some other scents mixed in. Perfect for a teenager. However, it was reformulated a few years ago and now smells kind of screechy instead of soft.

brendastarlet

Odeur 71 by Commes des Garcons was disappointingly 90s smelling, but it had an awesome write-up:

The ultimate anti-perfume. The notes are inspired by dust on a hot lightbulb, bamboo, metal, electricity and lettuce juice…no lie! But what does it smell like? Surprisingly, it's a completely wearable scent; metal and electricity manifest as the invigorating smell of ozone just before a storm, and the combination of we-don't-know-what makes for a familiar soapy freshness. Hot laundry right out of the dryer served up on your clean, sexy Xerox machine.

my favorite perfume: its main note is rosewater -- i remember rosewater in little wooden hand-painted vials, that my godmother brought from her native Bulgaria. the wood added a hint of aroma as well, so the overall effect was a forest nymph: powerful yet ethereal. Now the perfume retained the ethereal quality, but the other layers made it so smooth, a little sweet and summery like a golden tan.

My perfume smells like a forest nymph, who spent a day at the beach and is now sitting at a beachside cafe eating a pot-de-creme

dashenbka

I can't talk about this. I'm beside myself (yes) over the fact that I have to work on Saturday and cannot go to Bloomingdale's all-day fragrance thingee.

I almost bought this book on Sunday, but decided against it, which I am glad of because apparently he bitterly rails against some poor indie perfumer, in a really inappropriate, personal way.

Still.

Fracas is nice on me, but I'm not in love with it. I am, however, impossibly attracted to my GF when she wears Serge Lutens' Borneo 1834.

I'm being a total fucking nerd right now, but who cares. Scents that should be ultra-sexy on me end up smelling dated and old-ladyish; scents that are known for being "more mature" end up really sexy on me. It's strange! Also, why Givenchy's Amarige has been a favorite of mine for years.

I'm obsessed with perfumes. I started working at Ulta for makeup, but now own more perfume than I ever thought I would. Some of my favorites:

Kenzo Amour-I feel really sexy when I wear this. Its got a bit of a chocolate smell. Maybe the frangipani?

Marc Jacobs Essence-Its the only floral I'll wear. Reminds me of my mom's miniature gardenia bushes. Also reminds me of Casual by Paul Sebastion. I wore the shit out of that in high school. This stuff reminds me of the beach. Its gardenia and sunscreen combined. YUMMAH

Jadore-MMMMMM.....luxe. I feel like a trust fund baby.

Vera Wang Sheer Veil-This is something I'd wear on my wedding day. Its light and virginal.

OH...and my honey wears RSVP by Kenneth Cole. Its SOO hard to not hump the hell out of him.

Oface

The last time my sister came home with a nasty-smelling perfume my dad told her she smelled like five nights in Renton (our hometown. Lovable, but occasionally ghetto. It's doing its best to not be a coal-mining town, and it starting to succeed).

That's my new insult for when someone smells trampy or cheap -- tell her she smells like five nights in (insert trashy local town here)!

FourInchHeels

@♥ dosido ☮: Now THAT is a perfume description!

I have one perfume--Fluid by H20, sadly discontinued--that seems to prompt universal and vocal appreciation whenever I wear it. Stupid name, but it smells good.

@and Begorrah: Demeter's Wet Garden! I was so sad when I finished my bottle. Their Rain is pretty nice too. And I liked Dirt, as well. (Hmm, if you mix Rain and Dirt and add some seeds, you pretty much have a Wet Garden.)

hurdygurdygirl

I mix my own scent, and have done since I was 14: rosewood and patchouli essential oils. It smells earthy and womanly, mysterious and warm, and I feel like a medieval woman walking through the English countryside when I'm wearing it. I'll wear it until I die. I always think that when my children smell patchouli or rose when I am gone, they will think of me.

ItchykooParker

@embobly: i LOVED gap's day.
i wear Romance by Ralph Lauren. It's a clean lily of the valley smell, with a yummy smell of cookies somewhere in there. i love it because it reacts really well with my sweat (there's a lot of it) and gives off this spicy, bright, almost bitter almond smell...like my body odor but better.

onesong

@RyanB: and the film of the novel does a beautiful job translating smell into sight and sound.

Apropos of nothing, I hate smelling like fruit. And when I was in Grasse, I did the whole "make your own perfum with a professional nose" thing and it was so much fun. Came out stinky though. Too much civet. I called it L'eau de Pipi.

desyliciou
