I was on a business trip, I had a fever, I was peeing blood, when I peed it felt like fire and almost passed out while the hotel door man flagged me down a cab. The worst part was the damn newbie (male) doctor told me I was probably just having my period! Luckily, the ER nurses convinced him to give me drugs.

First, cranberry juice cocktail is useless--it has a negligble amount of actual cranberry juice and is full of high fructose corn syrup which actually encourages the growth of the bacteria you're trying to clear. So, sorry, but cranberry and vodka won't do shit. If you are going for homeopathic, you have to drink the pure, expensive and unbearably bitter cranberry juice (that you can sweeten with honey). At one point, I was also given a "just in case" antibiotic prescription and encouraged to take an antibiotic any time I felt a UTI coming on. This is beyond dangerous, not only because antibiotics are by definition, anti-LIFE, but also because taking antibiotics willy-nilly absolutely fucks with your immune system, ultimately leaving you open to more infections with less and less natural ability to fight them either naturally or with standard antibiotics. For me, the answer is a natural supplement called d-manoose that i take with a glass of pure cranberry juice every time i have sex. Yeah, it's a little troublesome when away from home to carry a bottle of D-manoose, but I haven't had a UTI in two years (down from 4 or more a year). For me, it's been a miracle, If you are having frequent UTIs, at least try the D-Manoose before stuffing yourself with antibiotics or going in for surgery.

I also just happen to be very prone to UTIs and have gotten them since I was a teenager-- I think the first one I got was a year or so before I had sex for the first time. It runs in my family-- my 94 year old grandmother, who is in pretty amazing health esp. considering her age, has gotten them on a regular basis throughout her life and she hasn't had any kidney problems and it certainly can't always be attributed to sex (esp. now... ew). I only get about one a year now at the most, and am also extremely diligent about drinking as much water as possible and always peeing after sex. And if I start to feel even slightly off, I get right to chugging cranberry juice and that actually seems to do the trick.

I do remember, though, that my mom used one occasion when I was a freshman in college and got a UTI as a way for me to admit I'd had sex with someone (therefore admitting I had then slept with 2 people, since she knew I'd lost my virginity in high school to my then-bf). The wait at the school health center was too long, so my dad (he's a doctor) for once bent the rules and got me a prescription-- and then that lovely convo with mama ensued. And though she may or may not have been right at the time-- it really is a huge misconception to always and/or only equate UTI with sex.

But anyway, just saying - UTI does not have to = sex. As a grown up who does have sex now (and knowing that I have been prone to UTI's anyway) I now take the AZO, drink tons (water and cranberry juice) and also always pee after sex. I still get them from time to time even with precautions though. (Particularly when pregnant - women are even more prone to them then).

Probably TMI, but I have been told I have a narrow urethra and this is probably does not help in the UTI department.

i was thirteen, and had only started gotten my period a few times. i woke up one sunday morning with some slight cramps, which got worse and worse as the morning went on. by about 11am, i was in agony, couldn't stand, was throwing up from the pain, etc. my parents figured it might be appendicitis (seeing as i SCREAMED when anything touched my abdomen) and took me to the ER. once i got there, in addition to the pain, my flow had become rather heavy. so the doctors checked me out, saw the blood, and promptly kicked my parents out of my room to ask me if there was any chance i could be pregnant and having a miscarriage. i have never been so TERRIFIED, as my poor catholic-school educated self was thinking OH MY GOD I GOT PREGNANT WITHOUT EVER EVEN KISSING A BOY. OH MY GOD I'M GOING TO DIE.

needless to say, i wasn't pregnant and i didn't die, but i did have the worst UTI infection the ER doctors had ever seen.

I didn't think much of it when I first got that "omg it twinges when I pee" feeling, because I wasn't gettin' the sexin' and I didn't think it was possible to get a UTI, BUT IT WAS, and it was sort of awful, and I shamefacedly marched to the campus doc and peed in a cup and she gave me some antibiotics.

One more thing: Uristat doesn't CURE a UTI, guys. It may alleviate the symptoms, but if you want that infection taken care of, you gotta to go the doc.

It started out with the having to pee feeling, but i could kind of ignore that. Then it moved into back pain. I didn't connect the two. Finally it took me down with a 104F fever and such back pain I could barely move. I had to be carried out of my apartment and went to the ER where they were shocked at how far it had progressed; my kidney were what were giving me all the pain. At that point you need serious meds and about 14 days until full recovery, 5-10 almost totally passed out, probably with pain meds (I had vicodin). So...yah, it can be bad.
That said, in this clip it didnt seem like this girl was quite at that level. And letting your 17 yr old move in with a 15 yr old and his family is...wtf??

I've had a really similar experience...it's insane how delirious a kidney infection can make you. Here's the best part of my story though, as I had a 105 degree fever and I'm totally out of it, they take all these x-rays and the "doctor" at the clinic i went to comes out and tells me i have a rare condition where all my insides are flipped...everything on the opposite side. yikes! I'm crying and freaking out....

Turns out he was reading the x-ray backwards...thank you low-income health care in America!

Specifically those caused from getting fecal matter in your urinary tract. Cranberry juice somehow prevents the infectious particles from adhering. Drinking lots of water based fluids, incl. juice would help flush you out and prevent the pee from stinging when you have a UTI, as long as it's 100% juice and not sugar, but it's not cure.
