Sewing by hand is very time-consuming and the stitch made by a machine is stronger and more uniform in appearance. Nonetheless, it takes time to learn how to control a machine and a lot of tools are needed.

If you want to try to make something by hand, look up some websites on hand stitching and buy some gingham for practice (the boxes in the fabric can be used as a sewing guide.). Then buy a very easy pattern, say, a skirt or loosely fitting tunic (a company called Kwik Sew has a "Learn to Sew" series). Check that the pattern does not require topstitching in a prominent place. Pick a fabric considered easy to sew, like cotton. Use beeswax to keep the thread from tangling. Have fun.

Also not seeing the point of applying makeup without a mirror. The makeup in my bathroom is in a cabinet with a nice big mirror. The stuff in my purse includes a powder compact with a small mirror. Other than a quick swipe of lipstick, when do you need to put any of it on in a no-mirror situation?
