I know my science friends get done much faster than we humanities types, and their "dissertations" are shorter, and based on lab research they were doing all along, from the start. As for math, the dissertation itself doesn't have to be long -- if you got the proof down, you could hand in a page. So if she finished college at 14, I don't see why she couldn't be done with her requirements by 16, and well on her way to completing a dissertation.

1) she was given a fancy title by a foreign school to work in a lab in SUNY when she was 18 (and with just an MS)

2) she just started teaching this semester (she is now 19).

yes, it's wonderful that a young girl is doing great in a field that is traditionally dominated by men (material science), but if she is going to be a tenured professor, her resume doesn't really have that much weight yet. (but as someone said, she has plenty of time to decide what she wants to do with the rest of her life).

heck, if i had her life, i'd be doing the exact same thing she's doing. btw, i taught my first college class when i was 19 as well (granted, i wasn't a professor, but a grad student) so i do understand how big a deal that is.

He managed to engender a really positive classroom culture in what could have potentially been a snippy shitstorm (college writers' workshops usually are) and gave awesome feedback without sounding like he was personally attacking you or your talent, or suggesting entire structural changes to your work.

My worst writing professor in college was in his 50s-60s. He was totally unprofessional--spread gossip about his own graduate students to me in a one-on-one thesis meeting! He was also clearly full of himself. Did I mention he was the head of the creative writing department and the founder/editor-in-chief of the graduate literary magazine?

Experience/age doesn't always equal ability.

I do have to think that a lot of people in these situations have been given extraordinary opportunities as well as being good at things. Most children aren't given the chance to skip through early grade school studies, and most doctoral programs have requirements of length of time for certain parts of the program. It just wouldn't be possible to finish in that length of time, no matter how good you were.

There was a kid like that, a 'prodigy,' who grew up in the same area as myself, was featured in newspapers and the like. Just by chance, we happened to be in the same room for SAT II testing a few years ago, and in what I'm sure was a moment of hubris, he ignored one of the critical instructions for the exam. When he realized several minutes in, he quite openly threw a fit and demanded that he be able to start the exam again. Nothing gave me greater pleasure than to see him embarrassed and summarily dismissed from the classroom as everyone quietly snickered, but I'm even happier to see someone who is talented and conscientious (as Alia obviously is) succeed.
