@melbo: If you don't find violence against women funny, then why is THIS funny? Or is it just expressions of violence against women on tv or in film (as opposed to actual violence in real life) that you find amusing? Just because you're a woman doesn't give you a pass against thinking it's funny to see a woman be beaten.

I almost find it funny... in a way that these people are so clueless that they think people might find it funny. There is not one moment of this that is even remotely amusing! It's nearly hard for me to get worked up over it because of that. I have to believe that a vast majority of people who watch this will wrinkle their noses and shake their heads.

Also this would be a great way to test potential friends and lovers on two levels -- you'd need to make sure they're repulsed by it, and also that they don't find it funny. Then you know they are not evil, and they have a mildly sophisticated sense of humor, maybe.

In general, abortion can be funny, sure. It's just a matter of class and taste. I have once joked that my period was late and I was thinking about falling down the stairs. It is even acceptable for men to verbally jest if they know there audience and hit the right key. But a visual like this. The image of violence, not funny.

Most abortion jokes are in the hypothetical. "How do we get rid of it?" But this joke is putting it into action. There is no longer, the space, the distance that is necessary to make it funny.

You know what you are kind of embodying a web phenomenon I wonder about alot...I know we fight here on Jezebel and have our difference but I also think alot of us would agree that the intelligence level of commenting on this site is alot higher than others. The way I see it, your reproductive rights have to do with your body. Men can assert their rights to not have kids by putting a condom on their body. Once there's a zygote's in the women's body, however, it's her call because...it's her body.

@Darth Funk: I, for one, would be zealous in holding Tina Fey or any other woman to the same standard if she produced something this offensive. But the parallel you draw is unconvincing. I can't imagine someone as smart and witty as Tina Fey posting a sketch featuring a female superhero, say, forcibly sterilizing men. 1) Saying it's "free speech" in a way that implies you criticizing it impinges on their free speech. Free speech does not imply that you can speak without criticism, nor does it imply a right to be listened to or respected.

2) Saying "it's a joke," implying that if you don't find it funny, there's something wrong with YOU, as if a joke can't be stupid, offensive, and just plain un-funny. This fails as a joke, and that's not my damn fault.

This is unfunny and offensive, and that's not because I'm overly sensitive and have no sense of humor. It's because this is stupid and offensive with no redeeming qualities.

What you've taken is the juxtaposition of "Superhero" with a common cultural response to "Abortion"--that it's something abhorrent.

So, you've got a Superhero doing something that there's a need for, only it's a terrible thing, and that's the crux of your joke.

Now, in order to overcome the natural resistance to offensive matieral, you've got to increase the terrible aspects of abortion--making it as primitive and brutal as possible to titillate and trigger the defensive mechanism's in the audience's mind (i.e., what gets people offended), in an effort to allay the brutality of it by pushing it beyond the bounds of rational plausibility.

Theoretically, at least, the humor here is sound.
