I think she was talking about the beauty-obsessioned-Hollywood bullshit, about how women stars have to be always attractive, period. Nobody reads, nobody tries to learn anything, no one cares if you ARE smarter than a third grader. Just hit your mark and don't look old or fat, mmkay? And for God's sake, don't talk about plastic surgery, pills, trainers, etc. All stars have 'fast metabolisms' and 'good genes'. Think about how a woman's "brave performance" really means 'made-up to look ugly' or 'nude but not in perfect shape, flattering light, or slimming poses'. But by awards time, you know they'll be painted, cinched, powdered, slimmed, highlighted, and wearing a brand-name gown chosen by a small army of stylists and act like they look like that all the time.

She's awesome and I don't care if she has undescended testicles, non-functional ovaries, or a conjoined twin.

I think a lot of the women who think they're expressing their unique personalities through their clothing are really just expressing their insatiable need to fit in and buy the right stuff. THAT's what she was denouncing, I think -- that and the fact that as a society we've been convinced that the best way to express who we are is through what we buy and wear -- and I think she's trying to convince women that we might feel a little more authentic and fulfilled if we spend more time expressing themselves through things like what we say, how we vote, what we work for, what we create, etc.

She married someone hilarious and brilliant who loves her for who she is without dashing out for a younger woman on the side. Let's not even talk about how amazing her genes are. So as much as JLC can go on Oprah and other shows and be all, "Just do as I do, and you'll be happy!" a lot of it is a result of leading a pretty charmed life.

i take offense to these kind of broad value judgements about fashion...if you don't find fashion interesting, that's fine, but why discount other people that are? some people see beauty, creativity, and and intelligence in fashion...it can be an art-form, an expression of and reaction to what is going on in the world today...just because it, like so many other art-forms, has been co-opted by mass culture, and commodified, that doesn't make it all bad. and yes, the industry has its flaws. i certainly will be the first to agree that a lot of what we see in "fashion industrial complex" so-to-speak, is not great for women's self-image, but umm, hello kettle, this is pot...how about she takes a hard look at hollywood instead of going after an industry that she's not a part of and probably has no behind-the-scenes knowledge of? acting is also easy to write off as "banal and trivial" if you don't know how much heart and hard work goes in to what gets put out there. in fashion, as in hollywood, there's a lot of crap also. but the good stuff can be really good, and it can serve as a vibrant, thought-provoking critique of contemporary culture as easily as any film.

anyway, i'm just rambling now, but all i'm saying is: fashion can be an art-form, and a mode of self-expression. just because jlc chooses to express herself through acting rather than the way she dresses, i don't think that gives her the right to trivialize those who opt for a more sartorial route.
