Heston's politics weren't always conservative. He was very active in the civil rights movements of the 60s and spoke out against racial inequality. He was very left leaning. I don't know what happened to that, but his activist legacy goes far beyond the NRA stuff.

I totally agree with Stacy London, re: the measure of one's success going beyond materiality, but I also think her show is guilty of perpetuating notions that retail therapy and materialism can solve one's problems (in love, in career, in life, etc.).

I guess "fashionistas" say "the British Ahmpeer" and "Napoleon's Ahmpeer", and not "the British Empire" or 'Napoleon's Empire"? (snotty rhetorical question needs no answer)

Also, I am not sure I buy that wearing clothes that fit properly and suit your figure = "upper middle class standard of femininity"

One thing I actually like about the show is that they have women with different body types on there, and help them find the styles that look best on them. I mean, it's pretty easy to buy clothes for a size 2, but there are women on there of different heights, all different body types. I think a lot of women fixate on their size number, and it's good for people to hear Stacey and Clinton say that the size doesn't matter - you look better in clothes that fit.

I remember one episode with a woman who lost a bunch of weight and was devastated when they went to Lane Bryant to buy blouses (as she was particularly busty). But those were the blouses that fit her across the chest - they had her get the blouses taken in at the waist. One "rule" I always use is to buy the item that fits the biggest part of me - it is not that expensive to get clothes taken in or re-hemmed, and I am a broke-ass grad student and shop at Target. (I also have a long torso and short legs, so pants and skirts will always need to be re-hemmed unless I can get petite sizes...)

I think there are some things they could work on to be a bit more friendly to the plus-sized crowd. E.g. they have a lot of plus-sized women on the show, why not use mannequins that aren't based on size 0? But overall I like how they always tell the women who say they don't care about what they wear because they need to lose weight, that they should love their bodies as they are and take pride in their appearance no matter what size they wear.

That's sort of the concept behind the show. Why not just give people on "extreme makeover - home edition" the money to spend as they please? From a charity perspective, it makes sense, but this is a TV show, which is primarily designed as entertainment for others.

Also, I am not sure I see it as exploitive, since people do have to sign a release - I feel like this is Borat all over again. You sign the paper, you go on camera, it's your responsibility.

Also, I went to Bosnia a few years ago. My reaction was along the lines of: "even though they had a war for five years, it still looks better than Albania." There's the hill in Sarajevo where the entire hillside is a graveyard, but that's not surprising if you already knew about the region. More surprising is almost getting run over by people going pedal-to-the-metal in the Yugos up the hill.

Also, the dudes get better looking the further inland you go. Hence Split < Sarajevo < Belgrade. OK, that might be a tangent there.

I catch What Not To Wear every so often, and the show doesn't really bother me because, hell, if someone wanted to buy me some clothes, then I wouldn't have to spend the money, and then I would get to worry a little bit less about rent and food.

I recently had to buy some new clothes for work. Like, literally had to. My cheap clothing falls apart on a cyclical basis, and if I want to look okay in my corporate office, I have to get some new clothes every so often. I don't love shopping and I'm sad when my shit falls apart, but hell, it's kind of my own fault for buying cheap anyway.

Having new clothes doesn't make me feel particularly better about myself (actually it reminds me that I'm a fatass), but it's one less thing to worry about.

Yeah, my concerns stem from actually having seen a ton of the show (seemed good fun at first, new clothes, yay!) But I totally agree that a lot of these women are in really difficult places in their lives, and again that makes me concerned with the "clothes are the answer" formula... I totally believe it feels good for a little while, but it doesn't change that they often have jobs they don't find rewarding, or no job at all, or various other real questions that aren't going to be fixed by clothes. Again, to give someone $5000 is AWESOME--but maybe they'd be better off if they were allowed spend it on psychotherapy, or career counseling, or a computer training course.

...that just wouldn't be remotely as entertaining for us. And in that sense, I do think it verges on exploitation, even if the participants are willing.

@GoodMorningAngels: not to jump on you - but have you seen more than one episode? I'm actually a fan of the show BECAUSE they take the individual's style into account. I've seen dreadlocked women keep their dreads, overprocessed women go back to the natural look, etc.

And the confessional-type videos of the women are really telling - usually, the woman is transitioning into a new period of her life and is desperate for advice on how to make that transition comfortably, or the woman hasn't paid attention to her looks for years because of other commitments (ie, life). So Stacy and Clinton take that into account, and while they're snarky, I think they're really genuine in wanting to improve these womens' lives. And I've never seen an episode where the woman, at the end of the show, was unhappy.

@GoodMorningAngels: Do you actually watch the show? It seems MOST of the "contributors" are women who have totally lost any "space" for themselves. They are either mothers or students or just-graduates, and they are so busy that they never take time just for themselves. Almost always, they have also "given up" in the sense that they feel unattractive and see no point "trying" anymore. At some point during the show, they almost always break down in tears because they have realized they a) need to take time to take care of themselves because they DESERVE it, and b) feel pretty for the first time in years if not their lives.

Overall, while some criticism given to "contributors" can be harsh, it seems to be a very affirming show- it encourages people to work with what they have, to appreciate their good qualities, and to see themselves as deserving of attention, love, and time.

Here are my thoughts, which I offer in hope of a good-faith discussion of the merits, not meaning to offend anyone: the show, 1, urges women to focus on _clothing_ as a way to feel good about themselves, which I see as pretty problematic, and 2, tells these women that the clothes they should seek are of a very narrow, specific stripes: namely, a white, upper-middle class femininity. No other traditions are ever acknowledged as having any value. Then the show gives the women a one-time infusion of cash, so that they can temporarily live this fantasy of class mobility--but it's nothing more than a fantasy, since next year and the year after, it's very unlikely someone else is going to come along and add $5000 to their clothing budgets. In which case, it seems fairly cruel to spend a week convincing these women that they are inadequate if they don't follow this model.

...and making other people feel inadequate--sounds like LC, no?

I wish I could take that Stacy London comment seriously. But just condemning LC as a role model doesn't mean WNTW isn't doing more or less the same thing--the vast majority of episodes takes these (yes, usually underprivileged) women and tells them, A, they need to worry MORE about how they look, and B, the look they should be emulating IS some kind of bland version of uppermiddleclass feminity.

I love clothes myself, but I think it's really problematic to ambush women and tell them (somehow the media has not gotten through to them on this yet!) that they need to worry about their appearance--and moreover that they should "like" the aesthetics that that two rich white people like. How is that any different from feeling like they should show aspire to Lauren Conrad?
