I remember seeing REM at the Drum Stick (family chicken joint by day, rock club by night) in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1982 before Murmur came out. They played all 10 or whatever of their songs and people were going apeshit over them. They didn't have any more songs to play, so they played their "hit" Radio Free Europe three more times and then spent another hour playing Velvet Underground covers. They had no idea what to make of it.

A few years later Michael Stipe "dated" a friend of mine for two years and they never ever had sex.

I remembered my camp counselor in '97 said that she was in two R.E.M. videos (she wasn't bragging, someone just asked her if it was true). I think she was dating the director or a crew guy at the time. It was for "What's the Frequency, Kenneth," and another song off of Monster.

When I was a teen I assumed Stipe was gay or bi because I saw a photo of him with black eyeliner and a feather boa. Dave Navarro can pull that off and be straight, but not Stipe.

I don't know Michael, "She Just Wants to Be" pretty much hit the nail on the head for me. I relate to that song waaaay too much.

Love, love, love REM. But then again Athens, GA is where my fam's from. Going to Wuxler records for the first time (where Michael met Peter) was like a religious experience. And don't get me started on Weever D's BBQ.

The one time I've seen REM in concert it was completely ruined for me by the asshole sitting next to me who midway through the show realized Stipe is gay and proceeded to make obscene derogatory comments for the duration. That is, when he wasn't shouting "play something old" during Radio Free Europe.
