I like to think I would have come out of my shell without the dresses and trophies but the fact f the matter is my mother only decided to pursue my modeling/pageant career after I got hit in the head with a softball - I sucked at sports then. She tried other things to her credit.

Nope the majority are not normal. I wont even lie. I was in the circuit for 10 years and my mother very rarely let my sister and I interact unattended with the other contestants and their mothers. They were mean, manipulative, nasty, and bitchy to say the least.

My experiences were really weird for instance I would usually win most beautiful or most photogenic but not always the overall pageant and my mother would make it a point to remind me that I am neither - I just was that day - and next week with new judges someone else may be. The way I looked wasnt the most important thing. It was just getting the sucker judges to like me so I could help my mother pay for college. Its weird but I hope it makes sense :O)

]]> <![CDATA['Miss USA' Marketers: Watch This Pageant Cuz Pretty Chicks Are Idiots!]]> re trainer: fair enough. i would love to run a 501 (c) 3 that simply awarded scholarship for the hell of it (with specific requirements, of course). but in all honesty, the reason i have the competition is to award the dollars that sponsors put forth. without an event (i.e. the pageant itself) to market to advertisers/sponsors, the money wouldn't flow. most competitors take advantage of the local competition becuase it gives them a chance to win additional scholarship funds at the state and national level. and yes, there is quite a sum of women who have collected a ton of cash for school without winning the national (or state) titles. although pageants are an easy target, i hope i've at least presented some points to consider. don't be quick to judge, friends. a lot of those girls go on to successful careers (see [www.michigan.gov]). oh, and i'm down with the drinking games but honestly-- "fake smile=everclear" ??!? we'll be fucked up before the donald can say, "hey, baby."

I keep hearing about Swan Brooner types, in which parents go kind of crazy and enter their kids into pageant after pageant after pageant, and go broke doing so. Did you ever see really obsessive weird parents? Or were most of the entrants and parents just fairly normal folks who wanted to win a contest or two?

I only ask because I think we, as a public, rarely ever see what goes on behind the scenes--like how contestants prepare for pageants, how much experience they have with them, what role their families play. It was really interesting and informative to read about your experiences.

However I never particpated in the ones the people with minimal pageat experience see - I did ones where little girls couldnt wear makeup and good grades were taken into account - as I got older and society seemed to not mind the overt sexualization of children I noticed sick shit like little girls with cutlets and spray tan machines - this is when I left. (well that and when MissUSA fucked me - I didnt place for the first time ever and my nemesis won but whatevs :O)

But will I diss my mother for giving me the opportunity to win scholarships and whatnot? nope - she was one of the normal ones - they used to exist in the pageant circuit but I dont know wtf happened

I don't understand the culture of pageantry in the US and I say that straight-faced because it is a culture, so maybe I shouldn't open my mouth.I do think however once you accquire and subsequently understand the power of your own volition(and that is,legislatively or should be , at 18 years of age)you do , what the fuck, you want to do.

In Ireland we have the 'Rose of Tralee' which is the big-budget version of Father Ted's, 'Lovely Girls' contest, wherein if you want to be a doctor, have nice hair, play the fiddle and support your local GAA team, you're in with a shot.

If you don't know what Father Ted is(it's a brilliant comedy based around 2 Irish priests and their tea-obsessed housekeeper that screened in the UK on Channel 4 years ago) then you'll probably not understand what I'm talking about.

alas, i am involved with pageants as a director for a local miss america program. i am a former (winning) competitor and used the program for what it was worth (scholarships and interview training). i thought and still think the swimsuit portion sucks but hey, i learned how to work out and lost 20 pounds achieving a size 4 for a brief moment in time.

in any case, i would be pissed if i were either of those girls 'showcased' in said promo. for the love of god, where is the sense of professional courtesy. i agree wholeheartedly with your evaluation and surmise this does nothing to advance any sort of (dareisay) progressive viewpoint towards advancing the positive aspects of the social stigma that is associated with competing in a pageant.

it's almost like the advert honchos couldn't come up with any positive spin for the competition-- "fuck it. let's just acknowledge this pageant is fucking pointless." sigh.

I'm guessing that some of the contestants may have grown up in that scene, and that makes me sad.
