But, say, in my sister's case, when her skin is extremely dry (and it is) you don't see the layer on top as easily unless she's tan because it blends in better. The darker your skin is, the harder it is for the flaky skin or even just dry skin to blend in and thus the "ashy" look. In addition, moisturizing well and doing other things to minimize drying out your skin (avoiding direct sunlight, etc) also help one look younger.

It's like the study of women being angry at work -- the perception of her is colored by personal experience and character. One person who thinks she was strong for staying with Bill is countered by one person who thinks she was an idiot to stay with him after that.

Bill Clinton in ultimately the 900-lb. gorilla in the room for Hillary. Fairly or unfairly, a lot of her candidacy is being colored by her relationship with her husband. I suspect that has quite a bit to do with the polarization going on right now. I think HRC is drawing a bit of strength from the idea that she can get into the White House and do things her way, and show people what she's really made of.

But then you get there and it's this political machine, where you're a "junior" Senator or Representative, you're expected to fall in behind the majority/minority leader regularly, are locked out of a great many things until you play ball, and have lobbyists trying too get in your door constantly.

In the end, you're immersed in this thing and even if you are stout of heart and brave of spirit, it wears you down. Then you start to slip. That's not to say a lot of these creeps weren't glad-handing dirtbags to begin with, interested only in power and lining their own pockets, but I think even the best person would be beaten down by Washington politics eventually.
