]]> <![CDATA[Magazine Publishers Call For Curbs On Fake Photos]]> from what i've gathered pretty much EVERY case of anorexia (as opposed to just wanting to be skinny) is about control, of self, environment, family, etc. they generally feel like in controlling their bodies they will achieve some kind of control over their lives. i mean we all see pictures of super skinny chicks and we're all subjected to patriarchy but only a few actually develop an eating disorder - it's not about being skinny, it's about being better at being skinny than anyone else.

anorexia is definitely only a problem in societies that have a thin ideal, which tends to only be societies in which food shortage is not a problem, so in a way it's a disease of privilege, a way of proving that you are better, or more self controlled than everyone else.

ayhoo, my essay was actually on Anorexia in relation to Emily Dickinson's poetry and Emily Bronte's Wuthering heights (i study english lit), i did a but load of reading though so i'm pretty obsessed with the whole subject of anorexia right now.

I really can't see this happening though - the addition of realistic-looking women, that is. If there's no Photoshopping, I could imagine some already stick-thin celebs trying to lose even more, knowing that they won't be airbrushed.

When people sat for portraits before there was photography, they were always with an artist who would (usually) determine the best lighting and most flattering angles for their faces.

Someone on Jez was mentioning this a few weeks ago, and I wish I could remember who: the camera adds ten pounds because it catches the weird shadows and half-blinked eyelids that our brains just "forget" due to our ability to handle visual processing on-the-fly.

If I think of my best friend's face, I don't think of her in an unflattering light, or with half a bizarre smile or with one eyelid ajar. I don't think of her with her arm at a weird angle or her thigh being at a weird angle and looking bigger than it is. My brain captures a gestalt--it captures her from all angles, and my memory of her LOOKS like her.

Photography captures the weird arm angles, though, and the weird jutting bits of clothing that look like gut, and that weird shadow under your chin as you flit through a patch of fluorescent light that makes you look like you have neck rolls when you don't. Photography captures the things our brains filter out. Photography is unforgiving because it demands that all angles be perfect.

It is VERY interesting.

However, I have done loads of research on EDs, and I can tell you that while society and culture play a role, it's not the main factor in how serious disorders develop.

You're right that there's a spectrum (I wouldn't call them types) whereby someone might have a very serious case of Anorexia or simply a form of disordered eating.

It has a LOT to do with control.

I don't have an eating disorder, but I can tell you that how fat I feel goes up and down depending on how skinny the people I see are. But I'm normal... not sick. Sick people might feel rotten no matter what.

Way back in the day when wealthy people were the ones who had the most access to food and didn't have to work out of doors, curvy and pale was the most desired look. These days, the wealthy are the ones with the luxury of choosing what to eat and the time to exercise/focus entirely on their own bodies, so being thin and tanned is considered desirable.

then came the whole "heroin chic" thing, and kate moss and the like were everywhere, and all of a sudden everyone went from a size 4 to a size 0. i think if there was more reality shown in mags/ads, people would begin to embrace a healtier outlook on image.
