I remember the dorm I lived in my first semester of college (all girls dorm at that) was OBSESSED with SATC (which I thought amusing being that I was the only one there actually FROM NY) but I was told repeatedly I was a loser for loving Buffy and Star Trek and that I'd never ever find a boyfriend. (*groan* Yeah. Right) I still don't understand how their love of SATC was any different than my love of geeky shows. Or how it was somehow "better."

I'd take the most hardcore trekkie any day over a Scary Sadshaw. At least their wardrobe is more original and the things that come out of their mouths more amusing and endearing. (And Trek was TEN TIMES more relevant and social comment-y than SATC EVER WAS!!)

Side note: The SATC episode that I watched happenstancely (again at the dorm years ago) that pissed me off to NO END was the one where she went out with the comic book shop owner. *STABBY*

But one of the reasons that I loved the show, was it really helped me open up to my friends and really encouraged a more open dialogue about all apsects of our lives. Maybe we would have become more open without the show, but it defnitely helped us along.

But I can't lie, I also love it for the light, fluffy, mind-numbing goodness.

I do, however, live in Toronto, where the Scary Sadshaws run wild and find them sad and pathetic and for that I have grown to hate SATC just a little. Just not enough to stop me from seeing the movie with my girlfrieds the first night that it comes out...

As far as SATC is concerned, I do like the show and own the whole thing on DVD ($10 per season at Target last Black Friday, and Anna you way overpaid at $300!). But it's a TV SHOW for the love of God!! So many people take it far too literally, like guy guy I went to college with who was convinced he WAS Carrie because he wrote a sex column for the school paper. People like that just make me sad.

I think there's a whole cult of people out there who find some cultural reference and just hold onto it. Usually people with no real originality of their own who are looking for something to bond with other people. I think those are the folks who gripped onto SATC later because the media made it so popular.

I love SATC for its comedy aspects and it makes me really treasure the relationships I have with my girlfriends but taking it any farther than that is just mindless and sad.

@SATC HATERS: I UNAPOLOGETICALLY love SATC. It's a comedy that was able to let my mind go somewhere else for 25 minutes at a time, which is what entertainment is supposed do. I became invested in the characters and am still mad that any woman would pass up Aidan in NYC, b/c these stories are based on real shit that goes on. It was not the show that created these girls - These women already existed in droves in NYC. Page Six created Paris Hilton. The fallout from the 80's indulgence decade created Candace Bushnell and her clones. There will always be girls who want to be rich and famous for being rich and famous, i.e. most of Hollywood now. But giving these idiots press and recycling old adages against Julia just makes her kind want to be more like her. I can't stand JA, but don't blame some HBO sitcom on the generation of idiot women who work in PR firms for the parties, marry men they hate for the apartments and give up themselves for men who sort of love them cause they can't find the zsa zsa zsu. Blame their moms or the press that doesn't give any time to propers "feminist icons".

Do I want to be a Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda or Samantha? Fuck no.

I like it because for every episode that was brainless, there was a really well done moment, like the aforementioned episode when Miranda's mom died. Or in the last episode when Miranda gave Steve's mom a bath. Or when Charlotte lost her baby. Or when they were all sitting around eating popsicles while Samantha went through chemo.

While these aren't exactly the most complex characters ever, calling them one-dimensional isn't really fair, either.

while the show is insulting, i have to admit it is very well constructed story-telling that i hate to admit i wind up watching in re-runs sometimes for a total of *gasp* 10 minutes before changing the channel.

To which I say, NO. To have fun in NYC, you do not need sequins. You do not need Louboutins. Recently I have identified a prevalent sex and the city syndrome (SATCS) among my friends (all young 20 something females who all moved to the city after college). I honestly think that growing up on SATC seems to have created in them these inherently shallow and false ideas of what life should be like for young females in the city. i've found that we can no longer catch up in sweatpants each other's apartments...instead if i want to catch up with them, i'm forced to go to some stupid trendy restaurant or another to drink fancy drinks and wear dresses.

i hate it. it's not real life, i can't afford it and it's stupid. i would lying if i said i didn't like to watch SATC before bed sometimes, but i really hate and resent the false ideals it has created for the girls of my generation.

LOVE Deadwood. Love. But it's kind of an apples and oranges comparison. SATC is a half hour comedy/drama. Deadwood is an hour long dramatic series. Compared to other half hour comedies (think sitcoms), the characters are multi-dimensional. They have flaws, they have things you like about them, things you dislike about them. They're much more well thought out than most half hour shows, imo.

Finally, I love shoes, but christ on a cracker, how do you watch a show for seven fucking years and all you take from it are shoes = pretty/cosmo = yummy!?! That says a lot about the viewer and maybe less about the show itself.

I don't really mind Julia Allison. I used to read her blog on occasion, back when she was a columnist for AM New York and didn't get anywhere near as much attention on Gawker. When she writes as herself instead of some Carrie-like persona, she's a pretty talented writer and seems like a decent person.

I have always hated this show. Its success embarrasses me. When I tell other women this, the stupid ones always shriek, "OMG don't you like, like shoes?!?" Yes, I fucking like shoes, okay...

When I ask them why they like it, they always say that it's because they feel that could see themselves as one of the characters and that it makes them feel normal. But to me these characters seem like vapid, one-dimensional losers, who care way too much about men and as a result come off as totally pathetic and needy. Every relationship on that show is co-dependant and it is obvious to me that there now exists a peculiar co-dependant relationship between SATC and its viewers, a la "I love you because you make me feel less ashamed of my pathetic-ness." It's a fucking endless cycle and it makes me sick.

Why don't you watch all of Deadwood instead?!? Even though all the females on that show are addicts, whores or both, they are fantastic, likeable, flawed, multi-faceted, compelling characters. And you will have so much fun walking around calling everyone "cocksuckers." I would way rather identify myself with Calamity Jane than Carrie Bradshaw. We're talking about a woman who publicly wets her pants on a regular basis, bus somehow to me she's way less shameful than CB.

The fact that Carrie was totally not perfect and did tons of stupid things is why i liked the show. Because it was real in its portrayal of people. Things weren't neatly tied in a bow by the end of the episode. Whenever carrie (and the other characters) did something stupid, they faced real repercussions and I enjoyed that honesty.

I officially swore of "Sex and the City" when all of the characters became pathetic: Carrie was constantly whining about marrying/not marrying Aiden (who was too good for her, BTW), Charlotte was depressed because she couldn't get knocked up, Miranda was depressed because she was knocked up, and Samantha was broken-hearted because Richard had cheated on her. I thought the show was supposed to be about female empowerment (i.e. how women in their mid-30s could be happy without a husband and kids) and then, suddenly, it was about how all women in their mid-30s were depressed. Yikes!

I really don't understand how this show continued and continues to be so popular after that. I cringe when women tell me how much they love it and how they are the biggest SATC fan.

Carrie always pissed me off. I could never understand what she saw in Big (other than the obvious) and it seemed like she was intent on not being happy. The ending was unbelievable and just gave women who consistently shoot themselves in the foot that the man in their life will magically turn himself around.

I would have liked the show a lot more if it had been just Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte.

SATC is not realistic. It's a comedy. I think the show itself is entertaining, but the "culture" that has been built up after it trying to turn it into a lifestyle has just tainted the whole thing for me. It's fun to watch when you know that no one lives like that. It's sad to watch when you know there are women trying to live like that.

And the abortion episode I thought was kind of groundbreaking. Having two of the four (including the lead with whom everyone is supposed to identify) admitting to having had an abortion and the single mom actually seriously considering one. I think that is something you still don't see.
