Bare Minerals is the best thing that ever happened to me. No more forehead bumps, nary a zit in sight, and I don't get shiny sweaty face in the middle of the day. I used to carry blotting papers and powder with me all the time, and I haven't toted that shit around in two years.

OK, so, really, the best way for a super-pale girl like me to get plump, red lips? Orgasm. When I'm aroused, my lips are crazy red (so much that a partner of mine actually once commented on how much he loved how red my lips get during sexytime). And it's a lot more fun than a lip-plumper!

blushingflower

I am here to say that I have had a colonic. Yes I have! I had a colonic after a 14-day raw foods cleanse. I did not get to see what came out, but I do know it was some old-feeling stuff. And I don't think I'll do it again -- not worth the money and not really necessary -- but I will say that I felt fabuloso afterwards. I did the gravity one, so there's no force-feeding water into the colon.

copyrooter

About the colonics: They had this discussion on another site awhile back and one of the nurses commenting mentioned that that stringy poop that girl is holding in the chopsticks (that picture was the same one in the other post) is "actually what mucosae looks like when it's been chemically abraded with, say, Drano: kind of brown/yellow, stringy, "mucusy," and looks a little like chicken fat. When intestinal mucosa is damaged/killed, it's not uncommon for it to slough off in strips or large sections, and to come out looking as described."

She also mentioned that "Our bodies have mucosae and produce mucus for a reason. While it may be trendy to chemically peel it off and admire it in the collander in which you caught it, you've just screwed with the interface between your nutrients and your body, not to mention that you've given all the bacteria that inhabit your colon a great way to enter your blood and lymphatic fluid. Better hope your immune system is functioning well for the next few days."

So, just wanted to let you know that what that girl is holding is actually normal stuff that belongs in your intestines that has been damaged and sloughed off by whatever they hosed up there...

enidtrollins

Okay, this is going to be totally gross and I know no one is going to read this, but I have to take issue with the colonics once again. Our intestines are incredibly complex. Most of what we know about them comes from doctors ripping apart cadavers. Our entire intestines are lined with mucous membranes, and a healthy individual is home to countless symbiotic bacteria. Basically, there's tons of shit in there keeping our shit moving.

I have a tough time believing that we're all walking around with weird synthetic shit lining our intestines because we just can't digest weird modern food. For millenia, our intestines have dealt with all kinds of crazy combinations of oils, starches, proteins, and fiber. We are not all walking around with weird bowel obstructions from our Crazy Unnatural Modern Diet.

I'm not hating on you if a deep colonic really worked for you. Maybe you were in the midst of digesting something that had adverse consequences for you, and getting rid of it helped you. Fine. I'm not slighting you. I personally wouldn't do it, but if it helped you: fine.

I just can't believe that our Terrible Modern Lifestyle is really killing my intestines from within.

tscheese

I bought the bare eccentuals starter mineral kit and really it's not great at all- I figure the people who buy this have to say it's great because they dumped so much money into it. It's not any better than my NARs light foundation with spf . I have dry skin now and found best for that is clinique's yellow moisturizer. I have tons of allergies so many products are off limits to me. This mineral powder does accentuate fine lines even with the 'primer' and takes way longer to put all this crap on than does a splash of moisturizer & dab of liquid foundation as needed. Plus all that excess powder from swirling & tapping the brush gets airborne - my makeup counter was coated with fine makeup particles. I It's very easy to overdo it too - one day I looked like that overtanned fla old lady on "something about mary (cameron diaz/ben stiller?). luckily it washes off easy. don't count on the salestaff to be able to give you intelligent answers to products and problems - clueless. Plus has anybody noticed the cakey overmade-up faces of those sephora sales people? they look like they should be out on the corner hooking. certainly not radiant-looking skin. If you want to see how you'll look in the crap they sell at sephora, just look at the salesgirls...and run!

chakeetah

I have no idea where people got the idea that colonics are a good idea, but any gastro-intestinal doctor will tell you that they are unsanitary and do nothing for you. For one, there is no way to completely sanitize the instruments they use in colonics. That's disgusting as it is. Then, it cleans out the "good" bacteria in your colon. And I can only imagine that it would get just a small percentage of the colon in the first place. Seriously, people. Do some actual research on this instead of listening to new age quacks.
And I'll add that I actually know about this stuff because I went to a gastro-intestinal doctor for ten years for my ulcerative colitis. Lay people tried to tell me that my UC could be magically cured by doing regular colonics. No, that is not possible, and in fact it would have probably made it worse, cleaning out the "good bacteria. I no longer have a colon, but I would suggest that anyone talk to an actual doctor about how to cleanse their bodies in a safe way.

cockeye

I had a series of four colonics of the ordianry variety where water at body temp was pumped slowly into my colon and the poop flowed, glooped, out into another tube - I did not wish to watch the progress - thank you.

I was recommended to do this to help irritable bowel syndrome that was brought on by a serious stomach bug. It relieved that very well and it also helped my psoriasis to disappear more than any other treatment I've tried for over a decade be it homeopathic, medical, prescription, herbal etc. There are no guaranteed with colonics - everyone is different and blah, blah, blah, etc, but I found great benefits.

kit10indublin

I guess I'm one of the few commenters here who has had good results with Bare Minerals? I started using Bare Minerals a couple of years ago or so, and it's worked especially well for me. I have a lot of skin allergies to deal with, as well as excema, and Bare Minerals has helped keep my excema under control. I still have to use my prescription creams every once in a while, when my skin gets itchy, but my rashes are gone and my face has never looked better than it has for most of my life. I've had excema as long as I can remember, and especially while I was in high school and college, my rashes were so bad and out of control that I basically looked like I'd gotten into a fight because so much of my face was swollen/oozing/bleeding all the time. My doctor and a couple of dermatologists tried giving me stronger prescription creams and various allergy medicines over the years, but none of it helped until one of those dermatologists eventually suggested that I try using Bare Minerals along with my pescription creams and my allergy medicine. I don't think the Bare Minerals cured my excema at all, but the stuff in the makeup definitely kept my skin calm enough to let my prescription medicines do their thing and heal my skin.

The only thing about Bare Minerals that isn't mentioned much to first-time users is that there's a definite learning curve involved and that LESS IS MORE. Those of you who described having dry skin and/or accentuating wrinkles or other blemishes after using the Bare Minerals most likely used too much of the powders to start with. You have to remember that you're going to be putting 3-4 layers of this product on your entire face, so you don't want to use too much of it per layer. How much will you have to use? Well...that's something you're going to have to figure out with experience. :P Also--for a while, it might take a bit longer than you're used to in order to put on the makeup, but the longer you use it, the quicker it gets to put it on. (I take about five minutes from start to finish.) And I've found that I don't need to use as much makeup as I used to.

Roxie

I know I'm really late here, but I wanted to share this with anyone who gets acne. I had great skin until I hit my 30s and developed adult acne. I tried everything until recently - I found a product called MD Forte, a cleanser which has a relatively high concentration of glycolic acid. I use the III, but if your skin is sensitive to acids and peels you may want to go with the II or the I. (The concentrations of acid vary.)

OMG, y'all - this stuff is amazing. I order it from Drugstore.com. It seems expensive, but you only have to use a tiny bit - the bottle I have has lasted well over two months. I use it every other day in conjunction with olive oil as a cleanser. (On my olive oil days I just massage olive oil all over my face, let it sit for about ten minutes, then use a hot washcloth to gently rub it off.) I massage the MD Forte on my face and leave it on for about ten minutes (they don't tell you to do that on the bottle, but trust me). It stings a little - like I said, if you have sensitive skin go for a lower glycolic concentration - but from the first time I used it I was blown away by the difference in my skin. It's like a mini-peel every time you use it. I'm shocked that the company doesn't market it better, because it's miraculous shit.

Between the olive oil (I know, it sounds counterintuitive, but the oil cancels out your facial oils and leaves your skin feeling like velvet) and the MD Forte, my skin has never, ever been better. No blackheads, my pores look really small, my skin tone is perfectly even, and my skin's never been this clear. Nothing sucks like cystic acne - I haven't gotten a major zit since I started using it. Just check out the MakeUpAlley reviews - people RAVE about it. Give it a try and let me know how it works out for you - I know it'll be good news!

♥ dosido ☮

I keep considering investing in Sephora stuff but am at a loss: I NEVER wear makeup because I have never, ever found a foundation shade that works for me. I'm pale but not that pale, yet even really light stuff is too dark on my face and in my opinion, foundation that is too dark is a greater sin than too much makeup in general.

I admit to being really lazy with makeup anyway, though. Aside from a little lipgloss here and there I don't get the point. My face just gets a million times worse when I throw stuff on anyway.

MumbletyEmma

Love Sephora, but other than skin care and lip gloss I don't really have a need anymore. I'm totally spoiled now - I have a good friend who started making her own mineral make-up. For real. I bought some of her stuff to support her (starting her own business and all) but didn't see myself using it as I was a die-hard Chanel and Lancome girl. I did give it a try, though, to give her feedback and was so sold on it after a week that I've used nothing else since. The foundation powder does not have mica, which is great on my skin (and I'm almost 47). I've had serious hormone problems lately and NO BREAKOUTS. The eyeshadows are to die for and she even blended several custom colors for my odd skin tone. People have told me I look great but can't put their finger on the change, so I have declared this woman a miracle worker. Others seem to agree and she's really gotten her business off the ground in the past 6 months. Hope she can still keep custom blending colors for me....
Yup, I'm way past spoiled.

Gretchen

Recently I bought a bottle of Jojoba oil, partly to later use it in a homemade massage oil recipe but also because I read it was great for skin oil balance - and boy, is it amazing. I don't think I'm ever going to buy a moisturizer again, and certainly not an oil cleanser, because this stuff will do it all, for a fraction of the price. As per her statements about oil cleansers balancing your natural skin oils, this stuff seems to do exactly that - not sure if the long term benefits will be any better than my previous expensive moisturizers because I haven't been using it that long, but certainly my skin is an awful lot less greasy throughout the whole day than with any previous product I've used, and less dry than without any product (I'm white and have combination skin, so don't think this applies strictly to the demographic she mentioned.)

As much as I'd love to go without makeup entirely, my complexion is uneven and blotchy (mild rosacea maybe?), plus I get the occasional brown patches from hormone fluctuation. I get weird looks just going to the gym without makeup on (okay maybe I'm just self conscious but...). I use heavy sunscreen on my face to keep the brown spots at a minimum but then the rest of me gets more tan than my face. Makeup is the only way for me to not look like a freak show.

MadameX

Oh shoot, I might be too late with this answer, but for the non-makeup girl getting married, I was in the same boat as you and I second the other poster who suggested to get it done professionally. I went to an Aveda salon. All I actually bought was lipstick and powder to touch-up with and I was really happy how it turned out.

I use a mositurizer and a primer before I apply the Bare Minerals, it really helps it not look so ashy. However, lately I've been noticing the powder settle in lines around my eyes and mouth that I never knew I had. And I tend to get oily looking by the end of the day. Should I change to another foundation or what? Too much moisurizer?

I LOVE the Bare Minerals stuff. But I'm young (late 20s), and when I had my mom try it at Sephora, it made all her wrinkles waaay more noticeable. Also, when I bought the starter kit, the saleslady said that the moisturizer that comes in it shouldn't be worn during the day, under the makeup, b/c it exfoliates, so it makes your skin all flakey. I have really bad dark circles under my eyes (had em my whole life, b/ of allergies), and Bare Minerals is the only thing that covers them up well, and lasts all day.

formerlydictator4life1

@technotica: I am a big fan of letting people do my makeup- if it looks bad, you can wash it off. Some counter girls are unfriendly, but plenty are nice and happy to share what they know. I've had some less than great experiences, like when they feel the need to use every foundation-type product they make on me even though I don't need it, but I've always at least learned something every time. You don't have to buy anything, really, the "hmm, I like this [blank], let me think about it," line is a fair reply. I really do like to have time to think about it sometimes, as I've had makeup go on great, and then within hours I feel like I have a mask on, or it's itchy, or some other problem not immediately apparent when they put it on me, and they get that. Or you can just ask questions, explaining that you're looking to learn and want to try some things out before you buy. Go when they're slow, and they'll likely be happy to play, as it gives them something to do other than align boxes.

Keep an eye out for when a makeup counter, or Sephora, has a notice up that a national or regional rep is coming to do makeup. You might have to make an appointment, and they'll tell you if there's a minimum purchase (which there sometimes is for those occasions). I got my makeup done twice by the regional Fresh rep, and I swear the 2nd time was the prettiest I have ever looked , and am still peeved I can't find her anymore.

mockingbird

@Gingerlime: Yuck. That sounds similar to the description my dad gave of what his colon looked like after he nearly died from having antibiotics kill off all the good bacteria and the like in his guts. Although he said it looked like it had been attacked by fire ants (my dad is a scientist and asked they use the student scope on him so he could see his own colon- I guess he wanted to compare it to all the animal ones he'd seen over the years). Really, he did almost die from it, and when you lose as much weight as he did that quickly it is scary for your family to see. Folks, learn from his experience, NEVER take antibiotics with also taking some acidophilus, or other probiotics.

From personal experience, the stuff that JD Regent talked about, that they use to clean everything out for scoping, is not fun, and neither is the scoping. Lower GI x-ray, also not fun. Why anyone would have a colonic and choose to go through that is beyond me.

mockingbird

I just wish there was a resource called "Makeup for Morons" because that's just what I feel like when I walk into a cosmetics store/counter/section.

I have given up on makeup for the most part. Most mascara irritates my eyes (I wear contacts). Foundation is too oily or doesn't cover enough. Concealer is too heavy for me.

My aunt works in gastrointerology; colonics are TEH EVIL. They strip your colon of much needed bacteria that fights off infections. Any doctor that's checking your colon with a scope will be able to tell if you've been doing these, because you'll actually develop a leopard-skin-like pattern on your colon walls.

It matches my skin perfectly, but my face no likey all of the oil and crap that's in it. The natural oiliness of my face and oils in the makeup is not a pretty combo. So, I can only wear it for a short amount of time and then I have to clean my face THOROUGHLY, which is cool, 'cause I should be doing that anyway, but I'm lazy at times. I may look again for a their non-oil based makeup though, 'cause I love any excuse to shop for cosmetics. Milani is what I use everyday because it doesn't break me out. It's not a spot-on match, but it's pretty damn close and the difference is probably not noticeable to anyone but my very picky self.

For the greasy girls I may suggest trying Desert Essence Thoroughly Clean Face Wash. I bought it at a health food store and it's worked wonders; it's helped with the oiliness and cleared my breakouts. Plus, it's all natural. I'm intrigued by the oil face wash but I think I found my good thing, so I'll stick with it for now.

I'm super pale (some might even say pasty...I would) with super oily skin (if yours is like mine...the kind that must be blotted by lunch...at the LATEST...or people will need to wear sunglasses to look at my face) and occasional rosacea too (just for fun). Anyway, I use DHC's Cleansing Oil (night only) with the Proactiv system (morning and night), I use DHC's Acerola gel as a moisturizer (morning and night), and DHC's Velvet Skin Coat as a makeup primer. Velvet Skin Coat ROCKS - I just wish it came in bigger tubes. It also makes a decent eyeshadow primer. Anyway. I LOVE Bare Minerals. I use a LIGHT dusting of Mineral Veil over my VSC, then the Bare Minerals foundation, then another LIGHT dusing of Mineral Veil to set it. It looks natural, and covers up everything it should. I also use the foundation as my concealer. Also, I don't know what you're coloring is other than pale - ha!, but I'm blonde/blue-eyed and the Bare Minerals Warmth has replaced any blush/bronzer I ever needed. The trick to using Bare Minerals is to use it sparingly. You can always add more. And I'm convinced that people that itch because of their products are using too much. I itch if I use too much.

I tried that oil cleansing method for a few weeks about a year ago; my skin looked good, but it was too time-consuming of a routine for me. I may start it up again though.

Currently I slather my face every night with a mixture of olive oil and some mystery butter I bought for 50 cents in Senegal. I was scared at first that all that grease (my skin is already very oily) would make me even oilier and make me break out like mad, but the reverse has happened. So I'm a big supporter of fighting oil with oil.

I've been using the BE Mineral Veil and it makes my skin look fine, but I've noticed that it's also been making me kind of itchy, which, given things I've read here, is worrisome.

I think I might try Alima, as recommended by lizzie0709; their website is so yummy. It makes me want to buy tons and tons of make-up. And they do internationla shipping! Bliss.

titilayo

@tscheese: I'm not sure exactly why it happens but it's always been my expereince that mascara dries up after a few months. You're supposed to replace it every 3 months, but that's more of a marketing ploy to sell more product. Still, mascaras tend to dry up and flake the longer you keep them. Like anything else, it's trial and error that's going to help you find a good product. I usually use the Loreal Voluminous, but it consistently tends to go bad after a few months. It's like five bucks so it's not big deal to replace.

Jezebabe

Going back to the "all-natural" aspect of the discussion, all-natural does not mean it will not kill you. Titanium dioxide, for example, is classifed as a Category 2B Carcinogen by IARC (the International Agency for Reasearch on Cancer). This means that there is animal-testing evidence that it causes cancer (specifically lung cancer). Of course, crystalline silica is a Category 1 Carcinogen (proven human carcinogen), and that is found completely naturally. It's not natural versus human-made that decides the safety of a product like this, but how you personally react. Frankly, I hate the whole "it's safe because it's all-natural, it's dangerous if it's produced by a chemical company". Neither one is always true. /rant

MoonJewel

Comment on Mineral Makeup! Lip Plumpers! Oil Cleansers! Colonics? Sephora Spy Spills All, And More! Please, please do not get colonics or use harsh laxatives for non-medical purposes. As others have pointed out, there is no need to "clean" your colon. At best, you'll be extremely uncomfortable, but at worst, you can become seriously sick or injured. I've had Crohn's Disease for nearly 20 years and as a result have had many uncomfortable or painful procedures (including two very painful intestinal surgeries), so I feel very strongly about this. Your GI tract is nothing to screw with, believe me.

DoyleEileithyia

@hamburgerhotdog: I'm pretty much a concealer-only girl, using foundation rarely, but I've come to like primers. The best primer I have found is by Napolean Perdis, Auto Pilot "Retouch." But it is ridiculously expensive, like $65 for a tiny tube. I got some samples of a couple of his primers from my favorite shop, and didn't like his general primer because I could feel it on my face (the same with the Philosophy one, ick, ick). But the retouch, OMG, it made my face feel like peach skin silk, and it grabbed my undereye concealer and made it stick, no creasing, without powder. But, I think it's meant mostly for crease-y or line-y areas, and so to use sparingly and not all over, hence the $65 for a little tube.

I mentioned the Smashbox primer yesterday. I like the apricot one, as it gives a little lift of color to temper my olive-green tone, and it does give a powdery feel (but a good one) to my face. I don't use much, so the small tube is fine. But, oh, that Retouch, if I could bring myself to pay $65 for a tube the size of eye cream to use all over my face I would in a second. It made my skin feel so gorgeous I wanted to date myself.

For mascara I'm using some new Neutrogena one Allure gave good reviews to, and it doesn't flake or smear, but it doesn't really do much other than darken and lengthen a little. Rimmel has one with Lycra in the name that I like- holds the curl, doesn't flake or run. Stay away from their one with the red plastic comb-brush- yee gads, clumpy, flakey, and just generally uncomfortable. (And all my suggestions are non-animal tested, as that's a big deal for me, too)

mockingbird

My mom is a colon hydrotherapist. From what I understand, the procedure is just a slow, gentle gravitational flow of water into the colon, and then, with the help of some abdominal massaging, your body evacuates it. I'm sure even my mom would definitely recommend that people stay away from cleansing their colons that harsher than that (enemas, chemicals, fire-hoses, etc). And she's the first one to say that it's better for people to just eat right and have a healthy lifestyle so they don't need therapeutic intervention in the first place. Because, yes, the colon, like the vadge, is supposed to be self-cleaning, but a lot of people eat a lot of artificial junk that our bodies don't know how to break down, and, supposedly, lots of people have nasty residue lining the inside of their colons -- even if you're pooping, you may not be eliminating all the junk..

All this being said, I've never had the guts to do it myself. But it makes sense in theory, and I trust my mom -- she knows her shit!

RosePetalPlace

I'm another one of those girls that loves the Bare Minerals. It gives me a beautiful complexion, and takes me much less time to put on than liquid foundation.

@hellavator: Depends on whether your skin is oily or dry. I'm sort of normal/combo and tend to be oilier in the summer and drier in the winter.

My personal choices are Smashbox Photo Finish in the colder weather and BE Prime Time when the weather is warmer. I've also heard good things about Dr. Brandt's No More Pores (or Pores No More?) for oilier skin.

Basically, if your skin in oily, you want one that helps blot the oil, and one that doesn't do that if your skin is dry.

The One

I definitely missed the memo that said we must all immediately start finding replacements for liquid foundation because it is no longer acceptable. I use Revlon something-or-other and it works just fine. The only thing I pay above drugstore prices for is skincare, not makeup, though I love it. I just do the Clinique 3-step thing, and I make sure to go at free gift time to stock up on mascara, because the one they make that has the combo comb/brush is the greatest thing ever. It never flakes or smudges or runs, and I live in the most humid part of the country-- if it doesn't smudge here, it won't smudge anywhere. And the comb is a lifesaver with the separating.

girlscoutcookie

Another Bare Minerals fan. I've been using the stuff for a couple of years now. Not to sound like an infomercial, but after about 3 months of using it my skin cleared up like I've never seen before. I have very oily skin and have been dealing with mild adult acne for about the past five or six years. It cleared it right up. I have very large pores and the fine lines around my eyes, too, and it certainly doesn't get in and accentuate them. Quite the opposite for me.

I realize that not every product works for everyone but I love this stuff. Do I sleep in it? Hell no, but I've never slept in any makeup (except maybe after a night of heavy drinking) so that doesn't bother me.

MadameX
