I luv that you are in NYC and a BoSox fan. I've hated the Yankees for as long as I can remember. It's cool because I always assumed that NYC was overrepresented here and so there were a lot of Yankees fans.

I saw that Pew poll. I guess its just telling me what I pretty much already knew sadly.

The polls from OH pretty much said the same thing. I don't expect a whole lot different in PA, WV, or KY...likely IN as well.

Also...in the interest of sharing why I also agree that PA is the marvelous CRADLE OF OUR NATION (new state nickname?):

I am not from Pennsylvania originally (born in Mass while my parents lived there for a few years, raised in Delaware near enough to the border of PA where I still live)...BUT!

My mom's peeps are thoroughly SoLanCo Pennsylvania Dutch Presbyterians/Mennonites, having lived nowhere but the beautiful Lancaster countryside since roughly the 17th century. The line did get diversified by those infiltrating Irish at some point.

My father's peeps were slaves who settled in Kennett Square once freed (some were enslaved here in lovely Delaware though!) to live as pious Pentecostal landscapers/builders at Longwood Gardens and such.

That's all. I'm just excited about PA these days. :)

OK, I've always had tendencies to lean towards conspiracy theories, but here's something I've been thinking about that whole Hilary sniper story for ages. Weren't most of the files that were made public about what she did redacted?

How do we know that this didn't happen? And no one ever told us? And then after a week someone went to her and was like 'um, that never happened, at least not officially' and so she wound up being screwed by having so much responsibility and experience.

I mean, a senator from maine under fire, not as big a story as the first lady. And obviously said story would make us not want to be a part of the former yugoslavian wars.

Esp considering that they're all having to lower rates b/c of what has happened here. (Although, in the case of the Bank of England, when their banks got all cash scared this summer & drove up LIBOR 50bps overnight, that was so NOT good for us either!)

Btw, for any non-econ geeks out there, LIBOR is the london interbank offering rate. It's the equivalent of our fed funds rate, which is the rate banks lend to one another at overnight (also the rate that the Fed cuts when you hear about that in the news). All banks have to have a certain level of liquidity (cash) at the end of each day. If they don't have enough, they go to another bank who has too much & pay them the fed funds rate for that cash overnight & give the cash right back the next morning. When all these banks got scared they didn't have enough liquidity this summer, they started to refuse to lend to one another. So when this happened in London, that sent LIBOR soaring. And since tons of mortgages, securities, derivatives are tied to LIBOR, that caused a big crisis in the global economy.

So yeah, this problem… slightly complex!

It's like they somehow missed when the Bush admin put homeowner bailout plans into effect last summer! @marin79: Oh yeah, and Greenspand claimed that the housing bubbles around the world (in England, Australia, etc) were proof that the Fed's policies didn't cause the housing bubble in the U.S. Um, because our economy has no effect on the world economy, clearly!

Keeping rates very low for such a long time was clearly disasterous when combined with deregulation. Admit it, Ben. Those who don't learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them. Sigh.

Just a little fun fact about Bernake… as a Fed governor, he argued for the fed funds rate to stay at 1% over an extended period of time because he was concerned about deflation. Then when rates started to be risen, he argued that it should be done gradually (which means in a predictable way that doesn't really shock the economy like it needed to be). These two things are contributors to the housing bubble and the resulting mess we're in now. (There's plenty more blame to go around, but just thought it was interesting that the guy who is supposed to help us get out of this recession is also someone who did his part in getting us into it! Oops!)

Anyway, back to Obama for a second. Forgetting my own personal hard-on for the guy, he does an amazing thing when he is talking to capitalists, and that is he discusses economic policy in a way that doesn't even remotely sound like populist rhetoric.

How is Obama calling for more regulation on the securities industry anything but populist rhetoric? It seems like a no brainier, say what's going to appease the masses kind of statement. I'm not saying that he's wrong about wanting more oversight, but just that both he & Clinton are coming at this mess from the same exact "Main Street" perspective (as they should). And McCain is going the Repub version of "Govt bailout is bad" (ironic since that's what the Bush admin's been doing though). All of these candidates are saying what is appealing to their base. I'm confused as to why you think what Obama is saying is so different? (Is it just b/c of who is saying it?)
