Yup, have had many crazy questions, coming mostly from ignorance and lack of experience. My daughter's father is Haitian, and very dark, so she is a medium kind of brown, and calls herself brown. She calls her papa black. Most people assume that I adopted her, but, interestingly enough, the people who can tell I am her bio-mother are not white. I think my daughter looks like she could come from India, or South America, and of course, Haiti. Forms are ridiculous - there is almost never the bi-racial option, always either/or. Alicia, Halle, Tiger et al. are helping to change the idea of black/white, though I think people do consider them black more than white.

As a child, when I first started to understand racism while growing up in Chicago, I thought the solution was to mix everyone up, so there was no longer white and black but only multi-racial. So, as an adult, I am doing my small part towards that.

Also, Olympia Snowe is from Maine, and our other senator is also a woman, though that doesn't get them off the hook of their republicanism!

It's damn competitive, but they take in new class every year that's comparable to what the investment banks do. I know some people who worked there at the time & given the political-leanings of lots of the senior partners, there was a ton of resistance to hiring her. The US-based partner I know told me that the only reason she was hired was b/c she came through the London recruiting office where they don't care about that stuff as much. General consensus though was that her last name would have hurt her chances if she had interviewed in the US.

But yeah, I know some really smart people who didn't make the cut there - not easy! Most of the people I know who work there have absolutely no natural social skills. (They actually have classes that they all have to go to that basically teach that stuff!)

I have six siblings, all adopted, who represent the entire spectrum of ethnicities, color, and race. Last week my mom caught one of the kids saying to another, "I'm not playing with you because you're not black enough." The irony is that the little boy she was talking to has very white skin and blondish brown hair, but his mother is black (Dad is Iranian/Chinese). His feelings were incredibly hurt and I credit my parents with taking on all of the issues these kids have learned from previous foster families and schools.

I love going out to dinner with the whole brood. Oh, the looks and comments we get! Half the time you can see people looking at my parents, then me, then the kids, trying to figure out who the parents are and what in the world is going on.

It's no surprise that my family is behind Obama all the way.
