@ecl: No good reason, other than exhaustion. I was in my pajamas, nursing sore feet after a dozen appointments that day, and I was seconds away from going to sleep when this whole conversation arose. Also, I come from a fairly liberal family where dinner table conversation was often based around what we'd read in that week's New Yorker -- I'm inexperienced around genuine stone age viewpoints, and not as scrappy as I might otherwise be. Also, between the Obama-smearing Mom, her equally conservative daughter, and the Romney-cheerleader Chicagoan, I was outnumbered. And did I mention the four of us were sharing a one bedroom? As in, two sets of bunk beds? When you're living in what amounts to a dormitory for the very tall, you sometimes just pull your head in for harmony's sake. Not that I'm proud of it. I short-circuited some subsequent political discussion by flying the pro-gay-marriage flag, and they basically didn't contradict me, I'm sure for the same cocktail of reasons.

I guess there is some joy in knowing that if this girl has any kind of career it will be over in ten or so years and then she has nothing. Really nothing if she votes for a Repug and he wins cause they ain't doing anything to ensure the stability of this country. Poor girl, she seems like she follows her mother's lead.
I never get why conservative, small-town girls end up in the fashion industry. There is a lot of nudity (not just in terms of editorials, but undressing backstage as well). I cannot stand it when a girl claims that she won't compromise her "morals" for the job. Uh, then find another career girlie cause this one is about the least forgiving you can get.
Tatiana should have told her mother that her beloved president is the poster child for terrorism. Terrorists don't want a Democrat elected because it screws with their agenda. Want a safer country? Try to vote the opposite of the terrorists.

i come from a family that is, at times, heart-breakingly conservative. i've dealt with the obama-is-a-muslim, gays-shouldn't-marry-bc-marriage-is-a-sanctity-and-health-care-and-the-IRS-will-suffer, homeless-people-should-just-get-jobs, free-healthcare-is-for-socialist-scum, etc, etc arguments. but ive dealt with them. so my question is, why, when tatiana was listening to this garbage, did she not make a better effort to ARGUE? the minute the thinkers just "leave the room and [go] to bed quietly," the world really will be lost to those who think putting one's hand over one's heart and mindlessly repeating a pledge makes one the right leader of the "free" world.

I'm kind of young and have a lot to learn, I know. I'm not exactly totally naive since I grew up in South Central Los Angeles. But sometimes when I hear shit like this, it makes me wonder, is this what I have to look forward to for the rest of my life? @That_little_attention_whore: haha Being Polish, I usually hear Polish jokes on why Polish people are stupid (sooo clever!!). Thanks for the actual Polish joke! I haven't heard any in awhile. I do love Poland though despite the crazies. Krakow is awesome but I'm from Warsaw so that's usually where I spend my time.
The Kaczynskis are maybe the creepiest politicians on the planet. You know they were child stars but they were only in 1 movie based on a popular children's book where they steal the moon...i'm fuzzy on the details. And omg Radio Marija is soooo insane (thought it's kind of like conservative talk radio w/o as much screaming). My grandmother sometimes listens to it. Polish people tend to be insanely socially conservative. About everything. When I visit my family there, we totally avoid all topics concerning social issues.

Not too surprised the Chicago conservative was from the South Side. The North Side is extremely liberal (except a couple pockets near O'Hare) and also affluent, cultured, and diverse. There's a reason all the touristy spots and trendy neighborhoods are either downtown or north of the river. North Side is mostly German, Puerto Rican, Polish, and Jewish; South Side is mostly black with several conservative Irish pockets near the suburbs. Every Chicago Republican I ever met came from the South Side, specifically Hyde Park or Beverly.

I never know how to deal with it. We have asked that politics not be discussed but one of them keeps bringing it up. (husband and I are liberal. brother, mother, and father in law are conservative)

Don't need to learn about the country or try to improve it or anything. Just stand up, speak, sit and you get to call yourself a good American. However, running for President means compromising on shit that stupid and doesn't mean anything (or even stuff that does--i.e. when was the last time we had an anti-death penalty pres. candidate?) because you have to get 50% of the country to vote for you and there's a significant number of people who actually care about this shit. It's like, why give your opponent something he can use to get people to focus on your pin rather than your ideas?

The good side is, I think it's safe to assume that most of the readers of this post will have the same reaction as me. @dashenbka: But America wasn't exactly founded by people escaping persecution for those reasons of bigotry and racism. It was mainly religious freedom they wanted and those religions weren't exactly tolerant either. It's sad because it seems as though this would make a difference.

That Christian country line is one I've heard too many times. Yes, a lot of the basis of laws were based on morals found in religion but that doesn't mean that we should have a national church or that the president should be a pastor. I'd love to see a president not run the country on personal beliefs so much as what is objectively better for the country on a secular scale. Not that personal beliefs don't matter, but fuck, I want someone who knows how to negotiate with people of different beliefs.

i always wonder how people who live in America, the ocuntry founded by and for those escaping from prosecution, can disperse bigoted and racist statements like that -- especially in this day and age. It's strange how a country that considers itself to be "free" is also very xenophobic.

i say that because when i hear my friends, children of Jewish immigrants who escaped crazy anti semitism, can drop the n-bomb like it's no big deal, like it's their right to hate on a particular race just cause they're no longer called out on theirs. it saddens and frightens me.

It's not surprising that there are still a lot of rabid racists and homophobes in the US, it's the fact that they are willing to shout their uninformed opinions to any who is within earshot. For example, don't assume that since I live in the South that I automatically want to commiserate with you about Affirmative Action or fight to ban gay marriages. I'll talk shit with you, no doubt, but we'll do it based on an individual, not on that individual's race or sexual preference.
