@nerdyone: What do you define as "destination wedding?" I live in CT but am getting married in PA because that's where my and my fiance's families live, but I'm asking some of my friends/colleagues here to go, get hotel rooms, etc.--technically, that could be seen as a destination wedding, albeit in a looser sense. And (just curious), what besides men renting tuxes do you find tacky at weddings?

@lalaland13: I collect etiquette books, and here's the actual drill: if you are invited to a wedding, and even if you accept, you are under no obligation to send a gift. It is customary if you accept to send a gift, or a check, and a nice gesture if you cannot make it. But an invitation is only an invitation. It bears no expectation on your part.

No mention of any commercial estbalishment or charity should be included with the invites. It is all right for the bride, if asked, to mention where she is regisatered, or to voice a preference for a charitable donation. Likewise, if someone is giving a shower for the bride, it is all right for them to say "she's registered at Target" or "they don't want gifts, please donate to the Obama campaign."

And never ask outright for cash or gift cards (as a bride once did in an invitation that I received. Guess what she got from me?)

I didn't have any bridesmaids. If I ever did, they wouldn't wear these. I had my best friend as my matron of honor, and she wore whatever she wanted.

Do I find these tacky? For the most part, yes. I find most traditional wedding stuff tacky. But after having been through the wedding planning process, I've learned to keep my mouth shut about this kind of stuff to people's faces. People will judge you and your wedding like no other event... tacky, tacky, rude comments. Like, if you're serving pie instead of cake, you may never hear the end of it. Even though you're paying for it yourself and it's not really their business.

Re: wedding registries. I guess the idea that people desrve shit for getting married is pretty ingrained, huh? Hmm. Here's the thing-I don't need a quilt rack. I don't need dishes, especially since I hardly ever cook on the ones I do have. I might ask people to make a donation to an animal shelter or something, if they feel they need do something. But that's honestly one reason I don't want a big wedding, so I don't have to feel guilty that relative I hardly know are getting me stuff because I felt like I HAD to invite them.

Hmm. Luckily, I think I have plenty of time to figure it out.

Actually, I'm not sweating the bridesmaid thing. I have one BFF and none of my other friends would be insulted that she got chosen. They know our love is sacred (but not backstairly). She'll be up there, and probably with my brother, too, unless my boy wants him on his side. They can coordinate their tie and dress however they see fit, which I know they'll do because I know them.

Also, would it be horrible for me to register when I move in with my boy? We actually have NO plans for a wedding in our immediate future, but we could really use a toaster, a vacuum, cake pans, muffin tins, some knives, a crock pot and all those other things people get when they get married.

I remember when I was getting married there was a woman on theknot.com who was having an all out major Disney wedding. The centerpieces were Mickey topiaries and the cake toppers were Mickey and Minnie. She also had jeweled Minnie barettes and Mickey on the invites and pretty much anyplace else you could put them. I was horrified.

Although not nearly as horrified as when I saw that a family member of mine was having a Precious Moments themed wedding. Those creepy big-eyed albino statues are worse than Disney.
