I would be more offended, except I suspect that she's just spent too many years in DC surrounded by an abnormally large proportion of men who actually care about this sort of thing. My brother was pretty much born endowed with the knowledge of 100+ years of military history, and he now lives in DC after several years spent being paid to play with missiles in various rural places. His friends and coworkers are almost all just like him. As much as I love my brother, if I lived and worked surrounded by him and his Patton-wannabe cronies I'd probably try to pass the blame for their weirdness off on biology too... Mainly so I didn't succumb to the urge to push them all out the window every time the word 'stryker' pops out of their mouths.

I also must confess to having had a hard time looking at that Aircraft Carrier without hearing "Highway to the Danger Zone"! Ugh. I am such a child of the eighties!

Seriously, though, I'd rather not know all the specifics of every weapon of war. I don't see it so much as a measure of intelligence, but rather as a sign of the increasing militarization of every aspect of American society. Why do we need to know this stuff? I can understand international relations, war, and the impact of these various weapons without being able to I.D. each of them on the spot. It's like we are all being trained as military personnel should they decide to reinstate the draft.

It's typical of this administration that she'd get into the spokesperson position. First, the Bushies have a disdain for the press corps -- and what better way to deflect questions than have a press spokesperson who doesn't know her stuff? Ari Fleischer, Scott McClellan and Tony Snow all had their own way of deflecting unwelcome questions -- ignorance is just Dana's schtick.
Second, it's typical of a bad manager that he hires people who aren't a threat to him. Bush's staffers have the optimum blend of loyalty and incompetence to ensure they won't ever show up their boss. Her ignorance speaks more of Bush's proclivities than of women, certainly.
Also, there are some women in (traditionally) male-dominated fields who are truly admirable. Lisa Randall, the theoretical physicist, is brilliant and wrote a great book on string theory.
