Well just to be annoying, let me re-state what I already said, above:

You can find Ono music horrible -- god knows you're not alone -- but the "nobody would know who she was if not for John" is the dumb part. Possibly you wouldn't know who she was. People who are interested in art, however, would.

Seriously, I don't expect everyone to be interested in avant-garde art (or even new-wave or disco), or give a crap about any of this -- I just found it weirdly dismissive of RSR to write off the fact that she'd be respected and remembered by people who care about the field she was in. Which is all anyone is really shooting for when they make avant-garde art (or new-wave or disco), right? I mean, sure, the public wouldn't have heard her name, but that's not really a good way of judging someone's success in the art world. (And you can hate or not be interested in that stuff and still acknowledge that it's important to plenty of other people.)

Maybe she's more famous than she would otherwise have been, but she's also subject to way more scrutiny than your average avant-garde artist because people have heard of her and thereby feel qualified to judge. But the person you were arguing with seemed to HAVE consumed Ono's work and didn't like it. In this context your response seemed a bit like "you wouldn't say that if you knew better." You may love her work and also appreciate it within the larger context of the mid-20th century avant-garde (I'm not a fan myself but I can appreciate what she was doing) -- but your comment was the avant-garde equivalent of rock snobbery. I don't disagree with you but the tactics are kind of irritating, is all.

I'm not trying to make this person feel bad -- my point was that Ono would be remembered as a talent within the context where she did her best work, which is perfectly natural. RSR is suggesting that she's a talentless nobody who was riding Lennon's coattails -- my response is that her work would be well-remembered in its original context even if fame hadn't put her in a position where everyone else would see it. You know as well as I do that most people have not heard of these artists (and why should they have? everyone has different priorities...). In only a few rarefied circles are these names famous. And the argument, after all, was about whether or not Yoko would be famous without John. She wouldn't have been, but that doesn't mean she's not a great artist.

Sorry to get worked up, but I just find this kind of intellectual name-dropping really distasteful. You're into making someone feel bad because they've never heard of Nam Jun Paik? REALLY? Leave that shit in the "Intro to Graduate Studies" classroom.

Part of what Yoko gets screwed for is suddenly having her aesthetics brought out to a mainstream that wasn't interested in the same things, so people can go around calling her unlistenable, without ever pausing to say the same thing about Young or Riley, who they've never heard. The other way she gets screwed is that everyone remembers her as some kind of avant-garde screecher, even though a lot of her best work is the new-wave stuff (like "Kiss Kiss Kiss"), which isn't particularly different from, say, Talking Heads. (That's where that stray bit about Liquid Liquid / "White Lines" / "Walking on Thin Ice" was coming from.)

True story: I interned for a tv show that was #1 in its day (90's...rhymes with Swosie O'Connell) For whatever reason (my guess was Whitney said she wouldn't do the show unless we gave in) we had Bobby as a guest on one day.Shows up cracked out of his mind with an entourage of 40 wannabe gangstas. Wearing a suit that can only be described as Joseph's-Technicolor-Dream-Coat-Goes-Ghe.... (Think primary colors...all over a standard men's suit) Right before he's about to go on (live TV, mind you) no one can find him. People are going crazy looking for him. He disappeared. No one dares tell Ro-Ro. Someone finally finds him across the street watching The Today Show (literally standing within the throngs of tourists holding signs vying for Al Roker's attention...it's Bobby Brown, cracked out and rocking a super-loud and tacky suit like only Bobby Brown can.) He gets coralled back across the street, holds a 'prayer circle' with his thug entourage (hilarious) in thanksgiving for being on the show and goes on to do a really odd but otherwise unremarkable interview segment. (America probably thought it was 'quirky'- we all knew it was the crack.)After his segment in the elevator on the way downstairs after the show, I went to hand him his thank-you gift which was literally a mug and a show tshirt in a little shopping bag and his entourage jumped me for whatever was in the bag (hello, it was a $2 MUG and $4 TSHIRT, people) because as anyone who has worked in this business knows, the word swag incites people to extreme greed...and the less classy the people, the worse the violent scramble for freebees. I literally looked like I had gone through a windstorm when they got off the elevator, hair all out of whack, outfit all askew. The kicker: when I went home that night, my father who had dropped me off to work that day and never had any idea of who was on the show, said, "I saw the strangest thing today. After I dropped you off, I went across the street for coffee at Dean & DeLuca and watched the Today Show crowd as I drank it and I could SWEAR I saw Bobby Brown talking to himself in the middle of a group of 10 midwestern old lady tourists." Um, yeah, dad. That was my day at work. To think, my father 'found' Bobby before our producers did! Oh, and a couple weeks later when Whitney was supposed to do the live show, she canceled a half hour before we went to air. Leaving Rosie to improvise since Whitney was scheduled to be the whole hour. She.Was. Pissed.

@rsr26: You are wrong. Yoko had her own career long before she met John and it is more than likely that she would still be known for that career had they never met. Marrying John made her very rich and put her in the superstar limelight, but there were plenty of people in art circles that already knew who Yoko was. Furthermore, I really don't think Yoko particularly desired or even wanted that level of fame, especially when all it did was lead to her being demonized by people who did not understand her art or her music as being "talentless", for "breaking up the Beatles", and all sorts of other abuse she suffered at the hands of the press and the public that bought into their demonizing of her character.

Anyway, since Yoko was bound to become famous through marrying John, I think it says a lot about her that she at least tried to use her fame and money for good things, like promoting the peace movement and using the art and music they made together to talk about women's issues.

I just don't think there is any valid reason for anyone to hate Yoko. Not liking her voice is one thing, but casting her as an opportunist who never contributed or tried to contribute anything of worth is just wrong. Plastic Ono Band is actually rather tame compared to some of the output by bands like the Boredoms and other outfits around since; Just because she was ahead of her time doesn't mean she was "talentless'. Quite the opposite.

Nothing will make me like Yoko Ono, I mean screw the beatles I don't really care one way or another - with the tension about song credits that was there it was eventual they'd split. It's over and done.

Her retconning John Lennon's past and having a stranglehold on unreleased material, getting to pretty much do whatever she damn well pleases with it, is what pisses me off. I'm pretty sure in the official John Lennon biography Cynthia doesn't get mentioned even in passing...

...That pisses me off.

The Bobby Brown thing however is perfect, although whenever Bobby Brown is mentioned I tend to think of the song by Frank Zappa (Which is brilliant) and that sort of works too.

Yoko's one slight input on the end of the Beatles was actually a positive one -- fully convincing John he should be doing something more avant-garde than he was. As much as I find Yoko Ono's "art" and "music" to be pretentious crap, I've always hated how they pinned the Beatles break up on her. Everyone, by now, has read how much tension existed between the band members, and that tension had to do with actual creative differences, as happens in bands with very strong personalities and talents.

And it is very true that men are much less supportive of women artists. We are seen as selfish loners, as opposed to the romanticized male ideal of the "artiste". Ever noticed how women are cooks, but men are chefs? Women are semastresses, but men are designers? It goes on and on.

I think Bobby and K-Fed brought out the inner freak in Whitney and Britney. They just didn't care to control their image or let other people manage their lives after a certain point. I think it was more about the woman, the men were interchangeable.
