In a similar vein, does anyone remember The Boxcar Children series? In the first book, they all lived in a boxcar (duh) until (spoiler alert!) they were discovered and adopted by some rich guy. Then in the later books they'd travel with him and solve mysteries.

And how I loved Encyclopedia Brown when I was about 6 or 7. The Onion did this great story a few years ago headlined something like "Murder in Idaville." And I think Sally would definitely have been a Jezebel.

Now Bette Midler crawling on the floor on Solid Gold meant we couldn't watch the show for 6 months but all of the rape and incest and no one even notices.

I clearly remember reading the sex and rape scenes aloud to all of my young friends when we were around 11. I feel like I owe them all apologies and $$$ for therapy.

I started with Ruby, the bayou New Orleans series, and then tried to read some of the other books. Eventually, I started getting really sick of the plot lines (always the same), the characters (always involving some innocent chick, some terrible mother figure, a boy who turns out to be kind of a douche but stills wins over innocent chick in the end, and some bitch, who is usually close to the protagonist).

Since I gave up the VC (which is addicting, I won't lie) I decided that I was never going to write that way. I think she's taught me a lot. Or...her ghost writer. Whatevs.
