@krismry: there's a huge difference between Situationism in '68 and Situationism in Malcolm McLaren's head, and an even further gap between that and anything that Vivienne Westwood did with it. I've read probably way too much about McLaren, and the thing that comes through loud and clear is what a cave-troll misogynist Tory the dude always has been, all the while thinking he's some kind of agent provacateur. I mean, look up what he tried to do with Bow Wow Wow -- it's sickeningly sexist. He was trying to start a schoolgirl porn magazine, all the while pitching it as some sort of delightfully anarchic punk thing! Fortunately, he's always been disastrously bad at reading people and nearly got himself thrown in jail for that one, and Annabella Lwin was a smart girl and told him to get stuffed. The first three chapters of "Rip It Up And Start Again" by Simon Reynolds spend a bunch of time talking about Malcolm and his crimes.

Westwood has always been way more of an intuitive designer than the more intellectual Situationists, and yeah, you're right, the past is always present in her designs, which is part of what makes them so sexy / intriguing / creepy. Sex (the boutique) would have gone nowhere without that whiff of Victorian repression to it. Which is also probably why her stuff is so insanely popular in the Harajuku street scene -- they're all still totally obsessed with Victoriana, and are way into repression.

nerdsausage is a busysausage

I LOVE that book. After learning more about Futurism, it's weird to me Marcus gives them little credit. I forgot to mention those Italian freaks, who initiated the first art-inspired men's fashion. (and before anyone comes at me with the 'but they were fascists' thing, read Gunter Berghaus' "The Genesis of Futurism")
Funny. My friend was in an Ants-inspired band and was able to meet Marco; every time he talked about it he got all excited and starry-eyed. I never knew who the fuck he was talking about.
@krismry:
I love that. Or does it all go back to art movements: the costumes from dada/expressionist theatre (the connection to Situationism being Lettrism) from that time really reminds me of typically 'punk' fashion. Ever seen a picture of Egon Schiele's friend Erwin Osen? He looks like a member of the Weirdos, only it was, you know, 1910.

trikitixa

The most mindbending thing about V Westwood is how much of her expensive couture stuff ends up on teenage Japanese dudes in Harajuku. Also, how for a while 2002-2005 her handbags were de rigeur amongst the elegant gothic lolita set.

She may have been the fashion arm of Malcolm McLaren's cod-Situationist headgame (you know, English punk), but I went to the Westwood show that was touring around last year, and everyone who loved Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean owes her for popularizing that hyper-fruity pirate style back in the 80s (the "Worlds End" lines). And her hyper-exaggerated bustle / artificial-butt stuff is just mind-blowing. They're all organic products of a mind that really just could not give a fuck less what anybody else thinks.

She can be a reactionary blowhard, but I love her style.

nerdsausage is a busysausage

Bleh, I hate debating punk. Even in the sense of the '77 "punk movement" ... I think it's kind of dumb how all the dooz at ROLLING STONE or some crap have theorized that there was a "movement" that managed to include The Talking Heads AND The Buzzcocks, as if any of those bands had anything in common at all. There were a bunch of new bands in the late 70s that didn't suck and/or sound like Emerson, Lake & Palmer or Zeppelin. And some people call that "punk".

It means different things to different people. And furthermore, it's not even that important because anyone who won't listen to a band based on the idea that it's "not punk enough" isn't much of a music fan to begin with.

As for Vivienne Westwood ... I like that she is more willing to use models of color than other designers, but to me she has always been Queen of the Posers.

TeenageGangDeb

Wouldn't punk have probably stayed an unknown subculture longer if it wasn't for the clothing? Obvs. clothing doesn't define the movement or whatever, the ideas and sometimes the music do. It also depends, as some people probably really liked what punk was about ( and not just the part about looking like an outcast), but then others probably just did it to be trendy. And didn't Johnny Rotten even say something like, "Now everyone is just wearing a punk uniform", or something when the movement got more mainstream? I can't remember the exact quote.

eraserheadpixies (now representing norwegian xanax and JESUS!1!@#!)

Re: sympathizing with preschoolers. Yesterday while doing my kidzoids laundry and realizing how little they really are (seriously... kids clothes are LITTLE), it hit me that as much as grownups harp on how easy childhood was, it really is a confusing time. You're still learning EVERYTHING, and 80% of the time when you ask why to understand, the adults (myself included) reply "Because I said so." Nope, being an adult is confusing, but at least some things make more sense.

Le Kangourou de Kataroo bites her thumb in your general direction

@Bathsheba: That comment leads me to wonder, for the first time, what Vivienne thought of American hardcore -- only I doubt she much noticed it.

To get even more pedantic about the post: Westwood's on a pretty fuzzy line between "creating punk-as-fashion" and "being first in the market to sell punk fashion, as noticed on others." Which is part of why she can say "rip your own shirt" and sell one anyway -- she's been offhandedly selling what's basically a street-bred style for 30 years, and (rightly) has never much bothered herself about it.

briardahl
